Grenelle--thank you so much. While I had no way to question the death question on the trangular signs, they seemed to be more standard road signs the others described here. Your explanation is the one that I think we needed. These signs were not roadside remembrance type things. Thanks to all.

and yet, angelfalls, the spped limit is so low in the US compared to Europe.

Glad to see us Brits are such safe drivers. Perhaps driving on the left isn't so bad after all

Grenelle, that doesn't explain why we saw so many of these signs on the side of roads (often with human black silhouettes cutouts along side them) where there was no access to another road. We saw them near the Chartres area and in the lower Loire Valley and Berry this summer.

I agree with Grenelle. A black X on a red-bordered triangular road sign means "give way to vehicles approaching from an intersection on the right".

Other non-official cross signs may well be related to road traffic deaths, however.

Sorry I've not been able to read much on the site recently. i've just seen BTilke's post. You are right, while the cross signs do mark intersections, in some regions they do post black silhouettes to mark road accidents. This is especially true of a road like RN10 where lots of lorries use it to travel on (instead of paying for the more indirect autoroute) - so the local communes run lots of campaigns to draw attention to the dangerous roads.

I've never seen a black X sign in the Dordogne that designated a road accident - only, as Grenelle says, to indicate you must yield to traffic entering an intersection from the right.
In the Dordogne, the traffic fatality signs are black human-body silhouettes with a bright red streak on the "head" erected on poles where the accident took place. There are also signs telling you how many deaths in what period of time. The main road from Bordeaux into the Périgord has lots of these, as does the road south from Périgueux toward Le Bugue and Les Eyzies.
