Patrick, you are in another of my all-time favorite cities: LEON. If you still have a chance, DO NOT miss the Royal Pantheon.

The bets ones are: Carmona, Plasencia, Zafra. Try it

The ones in Cadiz, Cuenca, Arcos de la Frontera, Malaga, Aiguablava, Seu d'Urgel, Olite, Bayonna, Caceres, Jaen and Puentevedra I have stayed in and are all very good. Not recommended even when the Paradores themselves are good, are the ones in Benavente and Soria since the cities themselves have nothing to offer.

We have stayed at only 2 paradores: Trujillo and Jaen. We loved the town of Trujillo because in March there were hardly any tourists there. The parador there was not fancy, but charming (old 16th century-convent). The parador in Jaen was amazing. We had a very lavish room with a canopied double bed, a small sitting area and a huge balcony overlooking the mountains. This parador sits at the top of a mountain and it is built inside an old castle (13th-century). The motif is definitely medieval. jaen is not a town worth seeing, but it is very close to both Baeza and Ubeda, which are both worth a stop. Jaen is also a convenient stops when returning from Granada to Madrid. I think you cannot go wrong with any parador in Spain.

we can only judge by the two we stayed at. we stayed at the paradore at carmona and the parador at arcos de la frontera. we loved them both. can't say enough positive about them. both are off the beaten path in comparison to staying in the united states. carmona was in the plains which we had never seen before. arcos was our favorite. however, in arcos look at the el convento. lot cheaper and very very nice.

Our first trip to Spain this year was
centered around staying at paradores.
Was a great experience, ranked as follows:

Benavente(loved the town with all the small shops)
Leon (most impressive)
Avila
Santiago de Compostela (breathtaking, what history)
Segovia( impressive aquaduct in city)
Would recommend any paradores, they offer great accommondations along with monumental settings.
