what are the best areas to stay in Salzburg?
Now that I got Paris more or less settled, it's time to start working on the Salzburg part of my trip!
I started my research by putting the word Salzburg in the search box...and got no results! Now I know there have been posts on Salzburg, so please excuse me if I am asking a repeat question!
I have never been to Salzburg before so do not know where to start looking for hotels. Can anyone suggest the best area - or tell me areas I should not consider?
5 of us will be there for 5 days. I'm sure there are hotel suggestions out there for me! We would like the price range about 80-125 euros per room (I don't suppose anyone knows of rooms for 5 people?) with an elevator and air conditioning, having been in Europe 2 years ago in the big heat wave. If anyone can suggest a hotel with those big pouffy duvets, I know my kids would get a kick out of them!
Thanks so much for making the planning almost as much fun as the trip!

We stayed at the Golden Krone on Linzer Gasse, which was a perfect area. It is a short 10 minute walk to the 'old' part of the city, but we actually preferred the Linzer Gasse area, which was a pedestrian street with lots of interesting places, and less toursty than the old city. The hotel itself is simple and inexpensive, but the room was clean and spacious.

Last time I was in Salzburg I stayed at the HOFWIRT Hotel, which is on the right bank of the river, near the Klapuzineberg (spelling? sorry). About 10 minutes walk to the old town. Affordable, great buffet breakfast in the morning, convenient location.

Is your trip during the summer? If so, and if you will have a car, you may wish to consider staying outside of the city in one the outlying towns, many of which are beautiful and quite scenic. This would give you the opportunity to be in a cooler area (in the mountains) if you get caught in some summer heat. Salzburg proper is very small and can be visited easily in a day or so....You could then spend you left over time visiting other areas as day trips - like Hallstadt, Berchtesgaden, etc.

I second EmilyC's suggestion. We will be spending a few days in that area early next month and opted to stay in Werfen instead of Salzburg. Lots for kids to do there (a castle with birds of prey center, the world famous ice caves) and a couple of nice little hotels. We're staying in the Hotel Obauer (www.obauer.com). Salzburg can be reached from Werfen easily by car or train (a 25 minute train ride).

thanks for the tip - we'll be going end of July/early August. one of the reasons we are going to Salzburg is for my husband's wish to go to some of the Mozart concerts for Mozart's 250th b'day. I think he would prefer to stay in Salzburg for that reason, unless of course there might be concerts in the outlying towns. That being said, I would like to take one or two day trips from Salzburg. One I had heard of is Hallstadt, so that suggestion is right on. I'll check our Werfen too - it sounds perfect for our kids! Maybe I cann persuade DH to spend a night or two outside of Salzburg while I'm at it!

I second BTNav suggestion for Pension Nonntal. Our 4 days there in 2000 were wonderful and the view of the fortress from our room was stunning. It has park like grounds and Otto's ( the owner) son is an award winning chef. Fabulous fruhstruck too.

Lots of the hotels in Salzburg don't have air conditioning - a nice one which does is the Imlauer/Stieglbrau (it's two buildings joined together with different names). It's a fifteen minute walk to the centre of town, and has clean, modern rooms.
In the old town centre the Blaue Gans has air con, I don't know about the hotel (it had booked up by the time I tried to reserve) but the restaurant is very good!
The old town is the more central place to stay for sightseeing, but tends to be a bit more expensive, staying on the opposite side of the river near the station is only 15 minutes walk away (or a very quick cab ride) and is usually cheaper.

I second papagena's remark about lack of air conditioning in most of Salzburg's hotels and pensions. I have been searching for several days now on accommodations in Salzburg center with AC that does not come with a high price tag. Even if the temperature outside is nice, it can be very stuffy inside the hotel room w/o AC. Another reason is that having AC can block off some noise too.

I believe the Best Western Zum Hirschen has a/c as well. We stayed there the last week of June this year - had a room with a spare twin for our daughter & the big, poofy comforters. Huge bathrooms, elevator, outstanding breakfast buffet. Minutes from the train station, across the street from a grocery/mini mall. A short 10-15 minute walk to old town. We loved it & would highly recommend it. www.bestwestern.com
