I'm so torn between France and Italy and now I know why-most of the things people say they love apply to both places!
I love the way the women wear neck scarves and envy that men can successfully hang their jackets on their shoulders!
I'm so glad Mrs. Medici taught the French to cook (har har)...

What Sheila, tower, blackduff, cig, Anselm, Steph and others make so much sense and you all put it so beautifully.
Another thing I love is "servis compris". It is so nice to have that social obligation dealt with by convention.

1. Long lunches...long dinners
2. Autoroute drivers who pass on the left and return to the right...
3. The most humble stone cottages with immaculately kept gardens...
4. No trash on the roads...
5. Watching the locals greet each other, always with a handshake or a bisou on the cheeks
6. Cheap (and good!) wine
7. Retirement housing for seniors provided by government; child-care provided by government
8. How the French love Americans...and don't understand why some Americans don't love them back! French can separate our politicians' behavior from people's behavior...they may not like Bush, but they still like Americans (IMHO)
9. Being trusted to weigh my own fruits & vegetables in the supermarkets.
10. The general appreciation and support of culture and the arts.
