My favorite European myth is that Europeans never wear shorts and that the Euros will spot an American 100 miles away in his pair: The only reason you don't see Europeans in shorts most of the time is because you're visiting them while they are going about their workday. You're not going to see a London Barrister strolling to court in his gym shorts. As soon as they go on vacation, they dress just as badly as us. And with the increasingly hot summers in Europe, you'll see even more of them trying to keep cool outside the work environment. They just need to learn what's "cool" and what isn't. (Black socks are a definite "no-no"

Zeus, whenever I read one of those threads I have a visual that immediately comes to mind. We stayed two years running at an agriturismo between Siena and Florence. The Italian owner picked us up at the Florence train station in his usual summer garb: extremely short shorts, black leather shoes, black socks, and a T or undershirt.

Sheila, my grandmother is Pennsylvania Dutch (so those could be some German superstitions, Calamari...)
I've also heard a variation of the opal superstition, but less specifically - opal rings are bad luck when given as a gift if the recipient's birthstone is not opal. I believe if you buy one for yourself, it's okay... Where DO people come up with this stuff???
