What About Skype ? - I phone update ?
I hope to be in Turkey the first of May. I will be in hotels with WiFi. Clearly, no one has a crystal ball, but I wonder if anyone has an educated guess, especially given the governmental shut down of social media sites.
* I would like to be able to SKYPE back to the US, to France and to Uruguay with my Tablet. Is it likely that this will be possible ? Or should I get a VPN service ? Or is there a better idea ?
* I have reviewed older posts on the use of I Phones in Turkey (especially in Istanbul) but I would appreciate an update as to your recommendations for using an I Phone, especially for local calls and for maps downloaded onto the phone with the hotel WiFi. I usually travel with an older, open phone and buy sim cards. Would that be a better alternative - along with those old fashioned (I still love them) paper maps ?
I appreciate any guidance.

You can SKYPE easily as far as I know. I doubt that you will be charged for roaming if you use free hotel or restaurant WIFI.
For Istanbul, the YANDEX maps are the best Eser says and she downloaded the free application yesterday on her 5C.
I know that there are problems associated with bringing in phones to use with a local sim card.

VPN would be useful for routine blockages but unlikely to be useful in case of social media blockages. As long as internet connection exists, people would find ways to get around filters. The only way to totally block social media traffic would be to shutdown the underlining internet connection. If that is the case, VPN would be of no use. I use VPN to protect from the last segment security problem as well as regional restrictions. Several sites are pretty insistent in redirecting to the local content sites when I really want to access the US content. While some sites have local content free URLs, the easiest way to restore the home regional content is to use VPN.

There are two bans currently denying local access to Twitter and Youtube in Turkey.
We get around this by connecting through non-Turkish VPNs or sites like ZenMate, most of which are free. The estimate is that over 7 million of the 15 million Twitter members found these other ways to connect within less than 24 hours and the numbers are now over 13 million, with possibly one million of them new members.
The Turkish PM said in his recent speeches that he will also block Facebook after he declares his victory on yesterdays local elections. I wonder who advises this IT ignorant politician on these matters?

Thank you very much, OC and Greg. I think I will plan to Skype from the hotels back to the US etc., and my friend and I will have one I phone to use to download maps, etc. That should do it, as long as we can make restaurant reservations as we stroll or have the hotel concierge do that for us.
I am sooooo eager to be there.
