what about sandals?
 

i have seen most of the discussions about tennis shoes in europe, saying that most europeans don't wear them. i am partial to sandals....is that better or more the norm over there? if so what style?

Sandals are very popular in Europe, particularly with the tourists. The style really doesn't matter. Be advised, though, that in crowded places and on public transportation, you may get stepped on a bit, so sometimes shoes are better.

Jen, <BR> <BR>I tramped all over Italy in sandals last spring. I was comfortable and never felt out of place or touristy. I also wore dresses almost everyday. I was always appropriately dressed if we happened to wander into a church and I find dresses much cooler and comfortable anyway. Obviously, it depends on the time of year, also. I would reccommend a sturdy pair with a good sole - cobblestone streets can be hard on the feet! <BR>Audrey

Jen - I, too, an partial to sandals. Just one word - MEPHISTOS. Try them, they are great! Can be purchased at Nordstroms or at the Walking Store in most malls.

I have three words in regards to footwear - comfort, Comfort & COMFORT! <BR> <BR>Most European holidays involve lots of walking, and I've found the best thing to do is take a long a pair of old friends, be they loafers, hiking boots, sandals or running shoes. At the end of the day your feet will thank you. If you do intend to get new footwear specifically for you trip get them a couple of months in advance and put a few miles on them so that they are broken in & your feet are more than used to them. <BR> <BR>Also, unless you have an itinerary that calls for a certain dress code, wear what you are most comfortable with. Besides, the guide book or map in your hands will give you away as a tourist before your feet do. <BR> <BR>Have fun!

Just wanted to post my two cents... I have been working on the right sandal for my trip. I have a high arch which i have discovered is quite common and a big problem. Mephistos don't cut it for high arches and neither to Ecco and then I found the answer. ARCHE They of course are more expensive. But try them on and you just can't believe how comfortable they are. And everyone I have talked to says you don't have to break them in at all they are comfortable from the first step! Well <BR>I am about to fork over my $200 and then I am going to buy several pair in <BR>Europe because they are as much as half the cost. They are made in France, and they have a web site which will tell you where you can find them. I think Arche is my answer for a high arch. Happy feet make me a happy camper!
