Theresa:
I like your style. I hate what happened to you. Just awful. My husband and I had a rental car for 2.5 months throughout Europe. The absolute worse thing that happened to us as far as the car was my husband loosing our rental car keys in a taxi that we took to a dinner show in Portugal. (I just posted on another site and said I would tell this story later, later came today.)
The point about Portugal was that we rented the car in Madrid and they did not have a key to give us...ALL of our stuff was in the car. They came in the morning and smashed the window, everybody was looking at us americans as if we had done something bad. One huge blessing was that we had a bike lock cable threaded through our 8 bags of luggage. ( oh, be quiet...) This huge "steel" thing was very visible for all to see. Even so, we took turns "sleeping" and peeping out of our hotel window all night for anyone trying to get near our car. Every night sound was "it". Aside from the subsequent "marriage drama" we suffered no losses. I keep all keys on every trip and pray to God that I do not have a "human" moment and loose the darn things. If it helps...I lost my big ole' wedding ring, not band, in Turkey, trying to hide it from the "robbers" that I had heard so much about.(he-he). It was not funny then. My husband actually found it in the sofa of the main lobby of the hotel about an hour after I had cried myself sick. No attacks please.

I too would like to know what kind of car you had rented. Was it luxury, middle-of-the-road, or cheap? We have twice driven around France (for a month the first time, 2 weeks the second time) and neither time were we robbed. However, we travel cheap (or not at all!) and we were in small, cruddy cars.
