Even an article dedicated to art and design overlooks Bibao's handsome, and much more venerable, museum of beaux-arts, http://www.museobilbao.com/in/ It's well worth at least a couple of hours. One bonus from flying into Bilbao is that the road from the soaring airport terminal runs through a hill and emerges on a bridge flying through the Guggenheim's tiara. What a dramatic introduction!

Sums it up in an excellent way. I especially recognized the urge to go to Bilbao every now and then for a change of air when the prettiness of San Sebastián just becomes too much. Two fabulous and extremely different sister cities.

I agree, Bilbao was such an unexpected surprise for me. I have now visited twice and find it a beautiful and vibrant city.
