Whassup? html used to work here
I just tried € for the euro sign and got € and I've noticed a lot of question marks where accents were tried Is there now no way to write accents and euro sign on the site?
|
Does anyone know?
|
I believe HTML croaked last year around the same time Fodors had a big outage, followed by the arrival of numerous java doodahs that clutter up the screens, and, at least in my case, frequently crashed IE. Don't know if these things are related.
|
HTML only worked for a while during one of the upgrades.<BR><BR>During that time the site was very slow and uncooperative.<BR><BR>Then it reverted to KISS.<BR><BR>PS. I am a happy XP convert. You cannot crash or hang this puppy.<BR>I restart once a week, whereas at work on win 2000 I reboot a few times a day.<BR>
|
The &euro; symbol went away quite a long time ago, but I agree with Sue that even accents were not appearing correctly in the last week or so. Then, tonight I used "entre" in a post, and it appeared ok.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>[email protected]<BR>
|
Isn't that weird, Rex. I saw your post with entree correct, and here it looks like entr?e. (at least on my computer)
|
Not so stupid, wemr. It used to be possible to type <&euro> (without the <>) and the Euro symbol would appear in your post.
|
It's very weird, Sue. It looks like a little box in my computer, despite my having entered exactly the same way on that post and on this one.<BR>
|
Thought I'd experiment a little -<BR><BR>Microsoft has released "Euro enabled" fonts for Office, so below I'll copy and paste a Euro symbol from MS Word to see if I can snooker Fodors' character set. Here goes.<BR><BR>?
|
Nope.

Oops, it seems as if I'm going to have to do a major revision of my web page at:
http://ljkrakauer.com/tags.htm The biggest problem is that the preview function is gone, so you can't try things out without actually posting. Allow me to try a few things here: e accent aigu, using <Alt-130> - é e accent aigu, using <Alt-0233> - é e accent aigu, using & eacute ; - é e accent aigu, using & # 233 ; - é euro using & euro ; - € euro using & # 8364 ; - € <b>bold</b> <i>italic</i> <u>underline</u> <s>strikeout</s> |
Well, it all seems to work for me, so far. I see é (an e with an acute accent above it) for all four ways of entering it:
Holding Alt while typing 130 on the numeric keyboard Holding Alt while typing 0230 on the numeric keyboard Using the HTML "named entity" é Using the HTML "numeric entity" é Unlike LVSue, € seems to work for me to produce € (the euro symbol) So does € I'm off soon to my French discussion group, but I'll experiment some more later. Sorry I can't do it using preview, but this thread seems like a decent place. - Larry |
just, LVSue's post was from 2003 - it might not have worked then, but it has certainly worked since!!
|
I'll try a few...<b>bold</b>
<i>italics</i> <u>underline</u> £ € <s>strikeout</s> |
I used alt 0128 for €
and 0163 for £ (as always) |
Here's a thought: my web page at:
http://ljkrakauer.com/tags.htm provides a little "clip window" from which you can copy special characters to paste into your post. So let me copy the whole thing here, to see if it all works: justretired's clips (select, drag & drop): á à â ä é è ê ë í ì î ï ó ò ô ö ú ù û ü Á À Â Ä É È Ê Ë Í Ì Î Ï Ó Ò Ô Ö Ú Ù Û Ü ç Ç ñ Ñ ¿ ¡ ¼ ½ € £ ¥ ¢ “ ” ‘ ’ • ® © ™ <b>YourBoldText</b> <i>YourItalicText</i> <u>UnderlinedText</u> <s>StruckOutText</s> - Larry |
sf7307, thanks. I've done this many time, and I never seem to learn: I pull up a post based on a search, and don't notice the date.
Anyway, it seems that all the HTML formatting is still working, and the only change in that regard due to the new format is the loss of the preview function. I'll alter my web page accordingly, and look forward to the time when it returns. - Larry |
I can't resist ...
€ è <i>italic</i> So let's see what happens. |
That worked out as well as can be expected.

<red>red</red>
<blue>blue</blue> |
Let's try &#128; for Euro:
|
Mmm, I wonder if my smiley faces work :)
|
Ok it did. But there were heaps listed on the following link which can no longer be accessed - http://www.fodors.com/forums/smileys/. Where are they now?
|
|
Yeh, thanks Travelnut O-) Tut, tut did I say forum, wash my mouth out with travel soap :-D

Testing my sign off

YEAH!! It still works.
Have a great day! Robyn :)>- |
This is a test.
This is only a test. <&euro> |

This is a test. This also demonstrates the value of preview!

Opps, my alt codes didn't work although they were fine until I hit post.

I assume you've all seen by now that the Preview function is back, and is even better than before. I've just updated my page on "HTML formatting in Fodor's posts", to account for the new "Preview" function.
From what I've seen so far, it works even better than the old Preview. You no longer need to click "Edit" to make changes - you just make them right on the preview screen. An obscure error of the old Preview function (converting Named Entities into the character they represent) has been eliminated. It's very well done. Thanks, Fodor's. My page, "Formatting and special characters in Fodor's posts", can be found at: http://ljkrakauer.com/tags.htm - Larry |
