Whale Bay Tunnel Iceland

Can someone please tell me where you start going through the Whale Bay Tunnel in Iceland? I believe it is close to Reykjavik.

Thanks

hi nancy,

the tunnel is on the main road north out of Reykjavik going towards Borgames. it's nothing special!

Thank you. Can you tell me if you were limited in time, would you drive all the way to the WEST fjords? Or is there a closer area to Reykjavik where we can see the fjords? Is going to Snaefellsjokull enough?

hi Nancy,

How long have you got? when are you going? the time of year for your trip is VERY important in Iceland because as you probably know, you have more or less 24 hours daylight in midsummer, and very little day-light in midwinter. so if you will be there in the summer, you can do a lot in a day - much more than you would normally think of.

That said, i would not drive all the way to the western fjords in one day - we effectively did it in two, though we did not go all the way back to Reykjavik but stopped off east of Borganes at the hotel Glymur. to know why, you'll have to read my trip report! [just click on my screen name and look for cucumbers!]

The western fjords - and the boat trip from the Snaefellsness peninsular to get there - were the highlights of our trip, so if you have the time to spare, do factor that into your itinerary.

The tunnel is Hvalfjarðagöngurinn and it's 5.770 m long (3.59 miles) and 3.750 m (2.33 miles). I myself likes to drive through the tunnels of Iceland. My favorite might be the one in the Westfjords that has an intersection in it. We wrote a blog about all the tunnels in Iceland (all ten of them) and you can read about it here: http://www.goiceland.com/blog/tunnels-in-iceland/2455/
