We've all heard the horror stories, how many have NEVER lost any checked luggage?

Never actually had anything lost (although sometimes the luggage took so long to appear I did wonder - two and a half hours in Havana!)

About ten years ago, though, I flew with a friend from Chicago to Minneapolis on American for Thanksgiving. I have to point out that she was already in a pretty mean mood as I had left the tickets for our first leg to O'Hare on her living room table and didn't realise until we got to the airport - fortunately it was a local airport and they held up the plane until we got the ticket and were able to run on!

Anyway, we got to Minneapolis, and my case and bag came off the carousel no problem. My friend's small bag arrived, but no case. However, she had put a strap with her name on it around the case and - guess what? - the strap appeared! On checking with American staff, they found out that her suitcase had been put with the luggage for the next flight an hour later - but were at a loss to explain how the strap got through!

I have never lost luggage but have been on a flight Frankfurt-Accra (Ghana)-Lagos on which the 50-100 Accra passengers, myself included, were told it would "take too long" to offload our luggage, which was packed behind the Nigeria-bound luggage. (The airline used to fly to Lagos then Accra but had JUST switched the order of the stops -- hence the Frankfurt baggage handlers got it wrong)
Our luggage was delivered to the Accra airport the next day, when the flight returned Lagos-Accra-Frankfurt.
Not a problem for me, as I was staying at my friend's house in Accra and we are roughly the same size. But for the many people travelling out of the capital it was a huge problem. I had the feeling that it didn't matter to the airline as they were only Africans, hence "used to" inconvenience........

Have had a sinlge piece of luggage either lost or delayed - on any of 20+ airlines for 50+ trips to europe and probably 300+ trips (not flights) in the US.
Did have one suitcse badly damaged between Zurich and JFK on Swissair - I reported it on the spot and had a check for a replacement in my hands within a couple of weeks.

Never lost anything yet. Keeping my fingers crossed that my good luck continues. Always feel a little nervous that our luggage won't be there while we're waiting for it. We or someone else once mixed up a suitcase. At that time I was carrying a cheap high school graduation gift, a bright red cardboard type suitcase and there was another one on the flight. We did not realize we had the wrong one until we started to unpack it. I don't remember the details, but we had the exchange made in a couple of hours. The airline came to our friends' home and made the exchange for us. It was great service, but it was so long ago, that I have no idea which airline to laud.

I guess I'm the lone wierdo who actually lost luggage and never got it back. We arrived at Newark in 1998, went thru customs, picked up bags, then had to recheck for our connecting flight home. I never saw them again! It was Continental airlines and they really gave me a runaround. They had a description, they know where they fly to and I am sure there is an unclaimed luggage room in all airports, isn't there? How hard should it be to check? I think they had a Columbo type guy traipsing wearily all over the world looking and looking. I lost it in june, they settled with me in September!

I think I have been fortunate (lucky maybe) not to have my luggage get lost or delayed. Anyway, the only thing I'd lose from lost luggage is my clothing and I'm up for replacing them. Not that I'd wish to incur more expense by this happening but if it does, I'd be happy to buy replacements in Paris.
