Westport Ireland Hotel or B&b
 

Hi I want to make Westport my base for exploring the area. HOpe to travel all day and settle in near town at night. I would like to stay in Westport close to town so I won't hav to drive at night thanks

Sorry, but we did not stay in Westport and so the following are not based on personal experience. However, in preparation for our trip (Oct.'04), I did make note of these two from the boards: Bertra House and Glenderan B&B.

Undoubtedly, some of the regulars who have travelled more often to Ireland will offer you personal suggestions.

Whatever you decide, have a grand trip!

We stayed at the Hotel Westport a few weeks ago and were quite satisfied, though it was pretty busy when we were there. Reservations were needed to dine in the dining rooms. Very good food in their lounge/pub -pleasant, comfortable and relaxed - fine for us old folks and the families with children (the young adults preferred the action in town). Nice grounds and quiet but an easy walk into town, even for this slow moving senior citizen, probably five minutes - shortest via the pretty riverwalk. You might also consider the historic Olde Railway Hotel -much smaller, centrally located right in town on the mall- we had a dinner in the adjacent restaurant/pub (excellent meal), walked thru the lobby and library and viewed the beautiful garden breakfast room. It would probably be my first choice if I ever get to return, as I liked its look of antiquity. The other old hotel,the Wyatt, is even more central, right on the busy square (octagon)- exterior and location looked nice and interesting but we didn't get inside. When are you going? Have a great time.

Why not rent an apartment if you are planning to make it your base. Hotel Westport is lovely but can get pricey for what it is. ALso I think they have lost a star and are now a 3 star hotel (I am not 100% sure on this). I am saying this as we were going to stay in the area for a wedding coming up in Aug but now we decided to rent and found a 2 bed apt in the village. we are planning family escorted trip...have sent inquiries to small group tour companies have gotten back 2 plans

wondering who you went with and how was your trip...would love to see your trip report! especially info on how different age groups liked sites, activities, etc.

our trip is 3 generations

we drove ourselves june 2003 and had a great time...but rest of family wants a driver

I second Chip and can't wait to hear all about your trip! I see you made it back in one piece and I hope that your trip was all you had dreamed it to be. Nearly 30 people on a single trip to Ireland and you did it out of love for your family. (Need one more granddaughter? :D ) You know I'm crazy to hear all about it so... when you can, give us the scoop!

Hi folks:

I returned from a trip in May that had as many as 11 people at one time and a total of twelve on the trip. It went well without too many personality conflicts. There were a few though.

We stayed at Teighbeg (http://www.anu.ie/tighbeag/index.html) which is actually in Murrisk, right at the base of Croagh Patrick overlooking Clew Bay. You would probably have to book the whole place. I think it holds as many as 10 people depending on the configuration. There are 4 rooms, one shares a bath though the entry is from the rooms, not the hall. Peter and Ingeborg are great.

If you go to the Porterhouse (right next to Matt Molloy's) and Kevin and Oclan are playing, tell Kevin that Bill the French Horn player from Colorado say hi. He may remeber me. We had a long chat a couple of times. I think they play on Tues, Thurs and Sun. They are really fine. Kevin has a different sense of rhythm than most and it totally changes the flavor of the music. Worth a stop.

Last year I stayed at Cillcoman Lodge in Westport and was satisfied with it. It's just a couple of minutes drive from the town centre.
