Westminster Cathedral Tower View?
Does anyone know if you can still take the lift up to the tower at Westminster Cathedral? It seems you could do this in 2002 with a charge. If you can still take the lift, does anyone know how much they charge? Thanks.

Nancy45,
I don't have any personal knowledge of this but here's a link to part of the Cathedral's own website which is encouraging people to sign up as "friends" of the Cathedral; http://www.westminstercathedral.org....e_friends.html You'll see that one of the benefits of being a "friend" is ; "Member only access to the following free events: a. Tours of the Cathedral, including parts that are closed to the general public, the Cathedral Tower and the Cathedral treasures." Looks as though the only way you will get to go up the tower is to take out a membership. Jim |
Actually - I don't read the web site that way.
To me it looks like ". . . Tours of the Cathedral (including parts that are closed to the general public), the Cathedral Tower and the Cathedral treasures." I don't know if the tower is open now but it was in early 2004. Why not e-mail the cathedral and ask . . . . |
If you do email them, I'd be interested in hearing the reply. When are you going back? I'm going in a couple of weeks, so if you don't find out, I might be able to look into it if I go there.

The tower opens for any visitors (there's a lift to the top), certainly Mon-Fri 0900-1720, with time off for lunch.
It's about £3 per adult. |
Topping for Nancy45 and also to agree that I mis-read the website - sorry!

Thanks flanneruk! As we have a large family I was hoping to get a nice view of the city more economically than the London Eye. Although I know this is not the same, it will still afford a good view I hope. Thanks again!

nancy45: You can get a very nice view from the observation deck of the OXO Tower and from the top floor of the Tate Modern. Neither are as high as the cathedral tower - but both are free.
Or from Primrose hill near Regents Park - also free. |
Thanks Janis! I'll make a note of that as well!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I did contact the cathedral and they give prebooked guided tours for 2.50 pounds (sorry, don't know how to make the pound sign on my computer) per person.
The Tower Lift is open daily from 9:30-12:30 p.m. and 1:00 - 4:45 p.m. at a cost of 3 pounds per adult, students and retirees at 1.50 pounds, and families (2adults and up to 4 children under 16) 7 pounds. We may check this out instead of the Eye or St. Paul's Cathedral as we are on a budget! |
