Westin Excelsior Rome?

My fiance and I are spending 2 weeks in Italy, with 3 days in Rome. His company can get us a great deal at the Westin Excelsior there and I was wondering if it is a nice hotel, in a good location? Any thoughts should we book it? Thanks!

The Westin Excelsior is on the Via Veneto right across the street from the American Embassy, which right now, might not be the best place to be. The Via Veneto is an all right location but not as good as the centro storico (Pantheon, Piazza Navona area) or the Spanish Steps. The hotel itself is certainly luxurious, but to me, a bit gaudy and over the top. It is also a place that many tour groups use as their "upper end" accomodation in Rome. But if it is a great deal, I don't see why you shouldn't stay there.

The Westin is very luxurious and if you can get any sort of really good "deal" then i would stay there...most folks aren't willing to shell out the kind of money the Westin wants. In terms of being "right next to the American Embassy" and not wanting to be in that area right now...unless you're expecting some sort of major explosion or demonstration I wouldn't worry about that and I really don;t think it is going to matter whether or not some tour group folks are staying there..who cares because if you're going to the Westin to meet the locals other than those who work there you can forget it..they cannot afford it either unless they're on an expense account. Enjoy your stay.

I've stayed there twice: the first time in 1958 when it was the the Excelsior and then about three years ago. Both times I thought it was lovely with an old world charm. Though it is not that near many of the tourist attractions, we love to walk and could easily get to many wonderful places including the Spanish Steps and Borghese Palace in the park. The last time we stayed there we used our Starwood points to get 50% off the rack rates. Go for it!

I agree with Bootman. I also believe that it has been recently refurbished. The location is fine for Rome touring. It is about a 10 minute walk to the Spanish steps and there are a fair number of decent place to eat if you get off the Via veneto.
