So glad to read the thoughtful contributions to this exchange (and thanks to MsNelly for raising it). Indeed I've been fretting over the same issue in the last few weeks, and have of course also started to worry about the new Covid surge in Italy (and Europe more generally).

Am leaving for a long stay in Rome in one week's time (5 weeks for study/work, followed by two weeks of vacation in Sicily). I was there during the early part of the Omicrom surge in mid/late December and remained vigilant (and safe)--cancelled just a few plans to eat indoors or in restaurants outdoors where seating was packed in rather too closely (opting only for outdoor restaurants where things were well spaced and not under a completely sealed tent). Will be planning on doing the same during the upcoming trip--in the US I am wearing a mask indoors when others aren't in my locality. I will be similarly masking in Rome. As others have said, so much of life got put on hold for the last 2.5 years and my staying home helps no one. But of course this is not to say that middle of the night anxieties don't creep in. For that reason, I'm glad to see this kind of helpful conversation going on.

"Spain, 'to go or not to go, that is the...'." Re: Ukraine

My partner and I scheduled to leave for Spain on April 4--as we follow the war in Ukraine. I know that there will be no physical danger in Spain; however, I've never traveled under these geopolitical circumstances. We are determined to make the best of it; yet, many vacations are about mental health and "getting away from it all for a period." So it's really about the psychology of this otherwise wonderful month-long trip. Most of you here have advised "Go!" Best wishes to our fellow travelers.

For those of us who live in Western Europe, travel around it and go about our day to day business as usual, the concerns about travelling to somewhere like AMS, Belgium, France, Spain etc due to concerns about the war in Ukraine are totally perplexing to me. Iím not sitting in my bomb shelter, not yet anyway.
