Only if one assumes cab drivers around the world speak your language
or one can communicate in number of languages.
Or if you've looked up how to write down 'how much?' in the language of the country that you are visiting....

And in Chicago,my home town, you really do have to watch for "the long way around".Sorry, not really cynical, well maybe, but those Chicago cabbies will get you.And do not assume they speak your language. From ORD to the burbs and back we always use American Cab and they have set rates,no meters.
Joan, thanks,I really do feel a little better. I guess we know what happens when we assume.LOL!
Spaarne......lincasonova is correct. We have the EL and the Subway and several commuter trains as well in Chicago..You must not be a Chicagoan.."hard to keep track" is right.

Even that's not necessary. Just write down a number that you're willing to pay. (Check your guidebook or ask your hotel for the going rate.) Or rub your thumb and fingers together and raise an eyebrow. What else would you be asking, after all?
