No one ever mentions The William Tell Theatre in Interlaken and its multi-media, multilingual spectacles stages nightly from mid-June thru late August - but if looking for something to do at night check it out. Also a casino in Interlaken to replenish dwindling trip funds.

Neckervd- thanks for correcto - thought friends said they gave out English synopsis but maybe not. Anyway the spectacle could be fun anyway. Have you ever gone - curious as to you comments if so.

Might also be in Swiss German which is another thing entirely... I don't know because I haven't been there and it would anyway take more than that to entice me to Interlaken!!

Cheese Factory - I think I remember that you will be in Montreux as well, Adelaidean? If correct then go to the Cheese Factory at Gruyères. This is extremely well done and very easy to get to from Montreux AND Gruyères is anyway a lovely village to visit.

Every Swiss child knows Wilhelm Tell, the National hero who contributed - according to the legend - to the foundation of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. Thre existed different versions of this legend which were orally transmitted during 2 centuries. They were written down at the beginning of the 16th Century only. Based on these documents, Johann Friedrich Christoph von Schiller, the famous German Philosopher, Historian, Physician and Poet wrote a brilliant Drama (of liberation from foreign rule) which became very popular from the first performance in 1803 (when Switzerland was occupied by French troups) until now.
I was at Interlaken Rugen many years ago and enjoyed it. The scenario and the some 200 lay actors (no professionals) have been changed many times in between, however.

Thanks both for edification of Tell play - friends are going to Interlaken area and I told them about it (They are staying in Matten right near the playhouse) and I told them no English but could this be enjoyed even if just knowing the general Tell saga and not speaking the language - like lots of action, etc and is it most dialogue. Thanks so nice to have some Swiss on board here - I learn so much from neckervd and an amazed at her -his? seemingly indefatigable posting of schedules and routes and sights, etc. Pretty incredible IMO.

Of course "every Swiss child knows William Tell..." only - we don't all call him that! My grandchildren refer to him as Guillaume Tell for example! While Swiss children (and Swiss in general) know about this legend (which it is...) foreign tourists don't necessarily. So knowing the story line if you are going to attend a performance like that is helpful.

Wilhelm Tell (like the name of the drama of Schiller) for German speaking people, Guillaume Tell (like the name of a former Swiss restaurant at Meknes) for French speaking people, Guglielmo Tell (like the name of the opera of Rossini) for Italian speaking people, Guglielm Tell for rumantsch speaking people.
