Dan -

The SFO-Zurich fare was offered in mid-January for about a week. I typed in my travel dates and this incredibly cheap fare came up. I seem to recall the fare was good for travel through May.

Those travelocity fares were being sold out as we looked. When I first searched, there were scattered dates throughout June; then only a few days the next time I looked. Now, apparently, they're all gone.

Those sorts of cheap fares disappear very fast, but I've never seen them go THAT fast. Someone said that s/he found cheap fares by looking every couple of days; based on this experience, I'd say have your credit card ready when you start looking and don't dilly-dally when you find a cheap airfare.

Actually, there's no big surprise here. June 14 was always the end of the shoulder season. Fares have always been extremely high from June 15 to September 15. The JFK-LHR fare last summer as well as this summer has been around $800 return. However, if you check constantly, every so often they throw in a quick 1 or 2 day sale. When the fare starts with a 5, I'll buy and I am pretty sure it will hit that figure sometime this summer.

Is there a best website? Travelocity? or do you check many everyday? I've heard so often that it is important to get a 'paper ticket'. Is it possible from these web agents?

To CRP: You said you got ticket to Milan for $316 in Oct. Do you mean last Oct. or the one in 5 months??? What a deal! I'm going to start checking fares to Paris several times a day. I'll be heading there in Oct. and I don't intend to pay an arm and leg on the flying part.

I got a fare $832 to Rome RT for July. We bought it at the end of April. Is it a good price? Unfortunately it's on SAS, so it's long flight.

Yesterday a poster named Betty told about a Kuwait Airline ticket round trip to Amsterdam for 298.10. Checked the travelocity web site and it really existed. Chicago to Amsterdam. Called to confirm and yes it did. Got online and got eight. What a deal.

I can't believe that fares haven't gone down. I am a frequent flyer with Air France and I have been waitng for their $869.00USD spring rate roundtrip to Milan to drop. They recently put their summer rates online and it is now over 1,200.00USD. However, I have found good prices with Singapore Airlines. I now just have to get from Fankfurt to Italy.

DB,

SWISS still has a daily nonstop JFK-Geneva flight! I think they codeshare with AA again, so check both airlines for fares.

I too had been watching and watching and could find nothing remotely affordable. Even Icelandair's last minute lucky fares which I've used out of Minneapolis were much higher than in the past. Then last week I hit dream maps on Travelocity and found that from where I live Continental was offering prime summer round trip fares for $414 to Great Britin. They were actually available for several days (and of course I waited too long to get the one which was my 1st choice. I grabbed 2 seats and we are then going to cross the channel on our own (which is ending up to be more of a hassle and more expensive than I thought it would be, but I think I've got it figured out).
