Welcome Back, Fodors Forums

Good practice in withdrawal!

s.fowler Jul 22nd, 2001 04:09 PM

You got that right Ed:) <BR> <BR>We're baaaaaaaaaaack!

Gerry Jul 22nd, 2001 04:58 PM

At least I know it wasn't my computer. I hate it when I have to diagnose everything.

Rex Jul 22nd, 2001 05:25 PM

I took them at their word, and didn't come back to check until after 9 pm. <BR> <BR>The post from Gerry does make me wonder how many people made their way to the explanatory message that was visible at www.fodors.com (the "root") - - I rarely ever GO there - - jumping instead directly to www.fodors.com/forums - - and that gave no clue, as far as I know. <BR> <BR>They COULD have put the same message there - - or done a re-direct. <BR> <BR>They also could have given some warning, since they said it was a SCHEDULED interruption of service. <BR> <BR>Offered solely as CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. <BR> <BR>Are there are any changes? new features? anything work better? like the search function? <BR> <BR>Glad to have the forum back, whatever the answers. <BR> <BR>Best wishes, <BR> <BR>Rex <BR>

Carol Jul 22nd, 2001 05:32 PM

What message? I never even got Fodors.com to come up earlier today.

Linda Jul 22nd, 2001 05:52 PM

Withdrawal hardly describes it! Don't see any changes, do you?

Rex Jul 22nd, 2001 05:56 PM

I got a message - - at www.fodors.com - - with a screen/line art drawing of the Fodor's logo, announcing that the entire Fodors site would be down 5 am to 9 pm, Sunday July 22, for a scheduled interruption of service. <BR>

Fodor Fan Jul 22nd, 2001 06:36 PM

Ohmygosh! I didn't know ahead of time. I'm bookmarked directly to this page and have been checking the site throughout the day. Munching lots of chocolate to assuage that vague uneasy feeling. So glad you're back before I start to shake! <BR> <BR>

Terry Jul 23rd, 2001 03:37 PM

Trying to understand what was going on yesterday. I couldn't even get the explanatory message from Fodors, even when I went directly to their home page. In fact, I wasn't able to get there until after noon today, when it appears others were able to by 8pm ET, yesterday. Why do you think that is? My browser is IE.

Rex Jul 23rd, 2001 03:51 PM

There seem to have two "service outages" - - one for "everybody" from 5 am to 9 pm (EDT), Sunday July 22 (it actually ended around 8 pm. <BR> <BR>And for IE users, it cotinued until around 3 pm today (or there was a second outage period, not sure which). <BR> <BR>I think it was the latter. After the forum came back last night, I saw essentially no changes. After I was able to get back on this afternoon, I see that at least one (or more) rude and vulgar thread(s) can no longer be located here. <BR> <BR>Thank goodness. And probably one (or more) contributor(s) restricted from access to this forum as well, if I read the correspondence from [email protected] correctly. <BR>

Terry Jul 23rd, 2001 04:01 PM

Thanks, Rex, for the explanation. I also suspected that this "down" time might have had something to due with the general ugliness going on here lately. It was time to "clean house."

Jody Jul 23rd, 2001 04:16 PM

At least I got caught up with my ironing!

Book Chick Jul 23rd, 2001 04:33 PM

Sweetie darlings, where are all the rest of you? <BR> <BR>I could barely get through this day & actually answered all my phone messages, can you believe it??? <BR> <BR>BC

Ian Jul 23rd, 2001 04:37 PM

You are all pathetic! Get a life!

Book Chick Jul 23rd, 2001 04:40 PM

Ian, dearest, you're on the wrong thread. You mean to be on "Some of Us Travel, Some of Us Just Pick Fights". <BR> <BR>Better luck next time, <BR>BC

Max Jul 23rd, 2001 10:50 PM

Hey book chick, read this...D..U..M..B! This is how I see you, after reading your response. Ian, you are on the money with this crowd. They can't function without this site. They get the shakes, had to iron because the site was down, finally returned phone messages, had to eat chocolates from the withdrawal, shrimp fouler becomes a goat. Someone get a medic before they all croak!

heavy Jul 23rd, 2001 11:32 PM

Yeah, I noticed that the "offensive" Oaktown=Rex post is gone, no doubt yanked in the same manner as the Oaktown post on the U.S. thread. Once Rex's name is mentioned with anything other than fawning overtures (and we all know who creates those fawning fans), he whines to Fodor's and they capitulate to his censorship demands. <BR> <BR>Too bad the rest of us put together couldn't get Fodor's to remove all of Rex's phony editorials though. Guess Fodor's has a favored son, especially when he poses as Big Brother editors. Now go on with you Rex, whine to Fodor's and get this one yanked too!

JJ Jul 24th, 2001 11:33 AM

I must have missed the so-called offensive posts. What exactly was so offensive that they were deleted? I see violations of Fodor's policy all the time, and the posts remain untouched, so I'm just curious as to what exactly it takes to makes Fodor's remove a post.

xxxx Jul 24th, 2001 11:47 AM

JJ, <BR> <BR>it was a few posts entitled, Do you like so and so. A poll if users liked certain people. It was silly. And of course everyone had to chime in. So then the person that it was about complained and it was removed and then that person started a post thanking the editors for removing it, opening that horrible, oozing, smelly wound all over again.

JJ Jul 24th, 2001 11:53 AM

ooohhhh....well I suppose I get one guess as to who the subject of the poll was! Or should I say, I get one guess as to which of his multiple identities was the subject?
