Weight Limits on Aegean Air
Will be traveling via Aegean Air with 2 weeks worth of luggage to Mykonos from Athens. How strict are the luggage weight limits?

Dukey Jul 19th, 2006 02:18 AM

If they are like the other airlines, then the answer would be "very" since it is a way to earn additional revenue.

Hopefully someone who has had actual experience with them will respond but be warned that one person's airline experience (including my own) doesn't mean it will happen to everyone the same way.

Very Strict. Each passenger in Economy Class is permitted to check-in baggage up to 15 kg for domestic flights and up to 20kg for international flights. You can carry on another 6 kg. For domestic flights, excess baggage charges are calculated by weight and charged at € 2 for each excess kg.

I agree that they check the weight very carefully and that it is just about the added revenue since, for a price, you can take considerably more.
But there are two things to remember. One is that the fares are pretty reasonable in first place so while we are not accustomed to paying overcharges, you can, sometimes, do it and still have a pretty good fare. The second, and this may be helpful, is that we flew Aegean and learned that people traveling together are allowed to 'pool' their allowance. This means that two people traveling together will not have an overcharge unless they exceed 30 kg combined. Further hint: what you're wearing isn't counted.

I agree with the "wearing" part..if you are close to the limit and don't want to pay extra then wear the heaviest everything you have on that flight!

hey lily,
Completely off topic, I know..I know!!

But I would like to know: Did you ever end up going to Bermuda? Have you done a trip report anywhere on Fodors or elsewhere?

I don't have experience with this airline, but the general rule is that the budget European airlines are quite strict about luggage weights and exacting penalties. Use any/all of the strategies suggested, but this is a fact of life with the budget carriers. As others indicate: think also think about your "total cost," i.e. if you still want to pack overweight, is the surcharge acceptable, given your fare? Also: the higher up in fare class (e.g. busienss,) the higher the weight limits and flexibility. Best to check the rules on the airline's website.

Thanks for all your responses. Jag girl. I am going to Bermuda on Thursday. I can't wait!

I really hope you do a trip report on the Caribbean board. There's so little info about Bermuda...especially Bermuda on a budget! Have fun!!

O.k. I'm done threadjacking now! :)
