weekend trips from Heidelber?
DH is working in Heidelberg for several weeks. He's looking for a 2 day/1 night trip idea for this weekend. He's got a car, has been to Black Forest, Munich, Austria, Strasbourg, Basel Neuschwanstein, garmish, lake constance, on other weekends so far. Wants something fun but not too far away via autobahn or train. Thanks -

How about Bern, or maybe Schaffhausen, Stein am-Rhine and the Falls near there.
You could see some of the other villages in the Alsace area like Obermal, Molshein, Kaysersberg, Riquewihr, Andiau, and Colmar. |
Berlin is having their Oktoberfest celebrations now.

They are the wine villages. If you want a good write up about them go to www.rotalis.de This is is a bike tour company. They have a bike tour through this area (and many others) and if you go to France and the Alsace tour you can see alittle map and click on the various towns. They also may be having wine festivals at this time. Another good web site is www.visit-alsace.com. This web site tells about all the villages and has a great map of the wine road.

cparris - thanks for the info; the wine road sounds good as he could meander at his own pace; tends to bring wines home anyway so this could be a good change from the german varieties...thx again.

If you like good white wines, then I'd highly recommend the Pfalz area, which is only a 45 minute drive from Heidelberg.
I'll let out a big secret and tell you one of the best wineries in Germany is in Wachenheim, called Dr. Bürklin-Wolf. It has the best riesling around and we visit a couple times per year to stock up on these fabulous wines. The best part is that a Brit is in charge of tastings and sales, so there is absolutely no language barrier. If you like bubbly, also in Wachenheim is the Schloß Wachenheim winery, a great supplier of Sekt. Other wineries I would recommend are Bassermann Jordan in Deidesheim and Georg Mosbacher in Forst. -Steve |
