Weekend trips away from Paris
 

In mid-November, I will be visting my daughter, who is studying in Paris. We would like to take a weekend (3-day) trip away from Paris and are looking for suggestions (prefer not to visit other major city, i.e. London). Will not have car so would probably use trains. So many possibilities - it's hard to choose! Thanks for any suggestions.

I haven't been in France in November so don't know the weather for sure, but think it is fairly similar to where I live (mid-Atlantic US) and there isn't any place I'd find that enticing in November weather to visit that is in the country. So, for me, that would leave cities.

It depends on your definition of major city -- is that any city of over 25K population or so? Or is it just not major capitals of a couple million.

I'd choose Strasbourg, probably, if that's not too big a city for you. You can get around the central city itself by walking, or even to the train station if you want. They do have a small tram to get around the city, but I didn't use it.

Other than Strasbourg, I might choose Lyon, but I think it's even bigger.

You could take the train down to Lausanne or Geneva (4-5 hrs.) then visit Lausanne, Vevey and Montreux, smaller Swiss towns on Lac Leman (lake geneva).

Thanks for your suggestions thus far. I realize that Nov. is far from ideal - but I'll be there for her birthday! I mentioned trying to avoid a major city just because she's found that living in Paris offers many more challenges than her experiences in Grenoble during an earlier summer study program. I found some "old notes" about Semur en Encois or Vezelaiy (please excuse spelling - I can't read my own writing)... any suggestions on these? Thanks again.

Hi efg, I know there are buses going from Dijon to Vezelay (and surely to Semur en Auxois as well) but with no car you'll be stuck there for 3 days..

Go to Lille & Strasbourg are small, cute and are really cool during the holidays, and not too far from each other either nor far from Paris by Train. Actually, Amsterdam is really cool too, and also a great weekend trip from Paris, but it's a bigger city.
