Weekend trip from Salamanca?

Hi. I was hoping someone could help me. A couple of families will be in Salamanca for a couple of weeks with their kids and we are looking for a nearby place to go for the weekend. We are thinking of Aveiro or Porto, Portugal, to be near the beach.

Are Aveiro or Porto good weekend destinations? I think they are 3 1/2 to 4 hours away by car. Could anyone recommend a hotel on the beach? Thank you!

Why not La Alberca or Ciudad Rodrigo, in the very province of Salamanca?

travelgirl2,
I can't help you with Aveiro and beachside hotels, but...
For a much shorter (1 1/2 hr. by bus) day trip from Salamanca, I second josele's recommendations of both La Alberca and Ciudad Rodrigo, especially the former, which is one of the most picturesque villages of all of Spain. Also, the more obvious choice of Avila, where the kids would enjoy walking the medieval walls.

Just to add the fantastic Ages Of Man exhibition, currently at Ciudad Rodrigo.

Thanks for the reminder, josele. A second for the Ages of Man exhibit. I've seen it in Valladolid and in NYC, and it's terrific!

I second Josele's and Maribel's suggestions about La Alberca or Ciudad Rodrigo.
