Weekend trip from Hambug - where to go?
I will be in Hamburg for two weeks and looking for some ideas for a great weekend elsewhere. I enjoy Hamburg and have been there several times so I'd like to venture out somewhere near enough to enjoy in 2 1/2 days (From Friday afternoon to Sunday night or early Monday morning).
Would welcome all suggestions and recommendations. Mid-30's female and would be traveling alone. Berlin? Munich? Somewhere else?? Thanks in advance! |
Berlin is a natural choice - - if you book at the www.bahn.de website close to 92 days out you can get fares 29e each way (though there is also a super-cheap bus).
For something in nature, consider also the island of Sylt, which is a 3-hour train ride to the north, with expansive dunes & beaches for swimming, walking biking; great fish, and some posh sides to it too, as it also attracts a lot of the rich and chic. If you're thinking of Munch, you might want to fly because the train ride is so long, and as long as you are thinking of flying anywhere, check out www.skyscanner.net . Put Hamburg (International; HAM) into the From box, and 'anywhere' in the Too box - - and see what cheap fares are from Hamburg to anywhere in Europe. Venice, Rome, Paris, the south of France - - these are only 2-hour non-stop flights from Hamburg (far shorter than a train to Munich!) and you can often get 99 Euro round-trips. Consider also pretty places closer to Hamburg, if not for the weekend, but for daytrips: Luebeck, Luneburg & Celle, Hildesheim, Goslar. Another fun thing to do is take a bike on regional trains, then get a regional pass for the day and stop in a few places, like Kiel, Schleswig, the Ostsee - - cycle for a while, then hop back on the train with the bike. |
I can reinforce the advice o dfourth, Berlin is just an amazing city! Especially during the weekend you can enjoy the lively atmosphere, just walking around and discovering new things everywhere. At night you can celebrate until the sun comes up at unbelievably crazy parties. Bt also the historical parts are interesting- the wall, checkpoint charlie etc.
If you prefer calm, relaxing "holidays" (like me), drive to the sea! The north and baltic sea are quite close, you can reach it in less than two hours (with you car or the train). On the islands Sylt (north sea)or Rügen (baltic sea) you can relax perfectly from bustling hamburg city (by the way, the nicest city in the world :) I always book a private house with friends so we have our own "wellness- hotel" ;) |

You have lots and lots of choices! I think you should consider going the "less traveled" route and head north to Schleswig and/or Flensburg. Both have lots to offer and will give you a taste of a part of Germany most people do not get to experience.

I second Lübeck, with the possibility of visiting some of the other 'Brick Gothic' cities along the coast like Wismar and Schwerin, or other cities along the coast. They are all UNESCO world heritage sites now due to the unique architectural style. If you decide on Lübeck, read Thomas Mann's Buddenbrooks, which is set in Lübeck, although never named as such.
