Weekend in Norfolk

Hello there Fodorites,

Bikerscott and I just got back from a long weekend in Norfolk. We stayed at a lovely B&B at a pub called the Wiveton Bell http://www.wivetonbell.co.uk/ Really nice rooms and perfectly located to explore norther Norfolk!

We ate dinner there both nights (reservations are a must!) and the food was excellent.

We spent our days driving along the seaside and visiting the old flint villages that dot the coast.

Sunday lunch was at a gorgeous pub overlooking the salt marshes. Highly recommend this place: http://www.salthouseduncow.com/

All in all it was a great short break and somewhere that many tourists miss. The pace of life was slow, the people friendly and the food very high quality!

I agree that North Norfolk is lovely. I've eaten at the Wiveton Bell, outside on a hot day, although I've not stayed there as we have a touring caravan.
Also agree that there are some fantastic pubs and restaurants in the area. However, one of our favourite evenings this year was picking up fish and chips from near Cley and then sitting enjoying it on the shingle beach close by.
Will try and visit the Dun Cow next time we are in the area.

Loved the pictures Jamikins. I've been to Cromer, Clay next the Sea and Blakeney but where is Salthouse?

jamikins Oct 20th, 2014 10:05 PM

Thanks everyone!

Salthouse is a tiny village about 1-2 miles east of Cley Next the Sea on the coast. Lots of walking trails along the salt marches there!

You are so lucky to be able to visit these places for a weekend. We [ from Australia] stayed with family living in Suffolk for two years and travelled up to Norfolk. Have a lovely memory of buying some smoked fish and bread rolls in Cley by the sea and enjoying a half pint at the nearby pub.

It is a lovely area.

jamikins - you remind me of a lovely week DH and I spent in Norfolk a VERY long time ago. beautiful hot weather and lovely food, even then.

why on earth have we never been back?

Lovely pics of one of my favourite parts of the world. My brother used to live in Norfolk and we were forever at Wells-Next-The Sea (had a Boxing Day swim there), or walking through the marshes in Blakeney. Also Great Yarmouth for donuts and slot machines (but don't tell anyone). Btw, did you know you can stay in Cley Windmill - it's a quite posh b&b.

Great suggestions and as always excellent photos.

Thanks so much.

IMO, the best pub in Norfolk at the moment is the Gunton Arms, between North Walsham and Cromer http://www.theguntonarms.co.uk/

Eating the most tender meat cooked over an open fire, looking out onto the deer park is absolute heaven.

Micheline Oct 21st, 2014 11:27 AM

The Gunton Arms is great! We were wondering if we would see the deer and as soon as we left the car suddenly there were over 1,000 deer running across the park. A dog frightened them. What a sight. Anicecupoftea - did you notice all the erotic art? Apparently the owners like to collect it.

Darn, mass that we missed the Gunton Arms...guess we will have to do that next time!

Gorgeous photos jamikins. Its been ages (maybe 20 years) since I've been on the Norfolk coast - need to get back there.

Your pictures just slay me, Jamikins. You have a great eye. Thanks for posting about your trip.

Thanks ladies :)

I think Norfolk is kind of out of the way of most peoples travels which makes it a bit special and unspoilt! Definitely recommend it...the coast is very wild and beautiful!
