Week in rome with older kids
 

We are planning a week trip to Rome with our 21 and 18 year old in mid- June. We plan to rent an apartment- any suggestions on what part of the city is a good location?
Any day trips suggestions to give us a small village experience? MJ

There have been so many posts on this, so you might do a search. Here are a few ideas:

1. One hour train to Orvieto
2. Bus to Frascati or other town in the hills near Rome
3. Train to Nettuno, a lovely town on the sea with a medieval quarter and a vast American cemetery. And some great seafood.

Stay in Trastevere, Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Navona or Pantheon areas. There's a lot of younger people hanging out in Trastevere and apartments are cheaper. It's a little less touristy with great shops and restaurants.

I am going to Rome in two weeks with my husband and two teens (16). We are renting an apartment in Trastevere through www.sleepinitaly (vicolo cinque)- so, I am hoping that it will be a nice apartment and will post my trip report upon return. I lived in Rome as a student and have been back twice on vacation. We chose Trastevere because it is a convenient location and is a very cool area for the younger set (although there are many cool areas of Rome). I also like the Monti area- Via Boschetta, Via Serpenti, and Via Panisperna area are also very cool with great stores, designers and restaurant. It reminds me of the East Village in NYC.
Rome is a walkable city. Testaccio has a lot of night life and is convenient to Trastevere and that might also appeal to your kids. We are also going to do a day trip to Orvieto on this trip. But a trip to Florence for the day is also quite easy and there is so much to see -although I would advise making reservations to see "David" at the Accademia or visiting the Uffizzi if that would be of interest. Otherwise, it is just a lovely city, small, and great for shopping!

Location: Ditto sandi_travelnut. As far as day trips, why don't you let your family decide? I think your young adults will enjoy themselves very much and may not want to leave Rome. There's plenty to do there.

We were in Rome for a week with our kids (14 & 23) and they chose not to leave Rome. There was plenty to do and they loved it.

For a completely different view of Italy, they might enjoy a side trip to Orvieto
