Week in croatia

Jump to last reply

My husband and I plan to travel in Croatia in early August and are looking for advice. We want to rent a car in Dubrovnik and drive up to Plitvice Lakes, stopping at recommended places along the way, then returning to Dubrovnik. We will have a week to explore (not including Dubrovnik, that is already taken care of). Curious about must-see places and advice on car rentals.

Any chance you can fly into or out of Zagreb one way so you don't have to drive all the way back to Dubrovnik? That would give you an extra half day or more to see sites rather than driving what you've already seen. If you had more time, you could drive back through Bosnia - there are some worthy things to stop and see, but you really don't have the time in my opinion.

You can still fly yourself one way Zagreb to/from Dubrovnik via Croatia Airlines - usually cheap direct flights. Depends how your flight timings work out.

For car rental, try Kemwel, EconomyCarRentals, or Auto Europe.

"Must-see" is kind of subjective. Many would say Split, Mostar, Plitvice, at least one island (e.g. Hvar or Korcula). Some would add stops in Trogir, Sibenik, Krka National Park and Zadar as you drive - pretty easy to stop along the way. You might have time to detour up to Istria and the Kvarner Gulf (Rijeka, etc.) but that might be pushing it time-wise.

Obviously August is high season. I have never been to Croatia in August, but I have heard it can be quite crowded on the roads then, so take that into account when estimating drive times from place to place.

With just one week, you will have to be extremely selective, and honestly, none of us can tell you what YOU will most enjoy. I would say that the Plitvice Lakes National Park is, IMO, the single most un-missable of Croatia's many splendors. Beyond that, your call -- and unfortunately, you will have skip a LOT! The good news, though, is that Croatia is a lovely destination so you will see some wonderful things.

I strongly recommend that you consult a few good guidebooks, and if it helps, I'll note that I found the Rough Guide the single most useful of the half-dozen or so I used when planning my time in the area.

I would also add that I was glad I did NOT have a car south of Split -- the scenery is so spectacular, that it was a delight to be able to ride in comfortable, convenient buses with uninterrupted views. JMO.

Like Andrew, I think it would make sense for you to consider flying out of somewhere other than Dubrovnik -- maybe Zagreb, maybe Split. Backtracking all the way to Dubrovnik is going to take a huge chunk of your very limited time -- according to viamichelin.com, more than 10 hours, not counting stops. :-(

    Hope that helps!
