Hi Pam - You could certainly do several in a day. Especially in an area like Val Gardena, where they are fairly close together ...
I usually go in the winter when it's snow-covered - so I take the lifts just to admire the views (- and have a gluwein ) rather than to walk.
But there are wonderful walks in all directions ... as you will see.
- The Alpe di Siusi area (- especially around Saltria/ Florian) is idyllic.
- The whole area around the Sella is breathtaking. (There is a Sella Ronda day-pass for lifts and buses if you want to do the complete tour ...)
- Lake Braies (- upper Val Pusteria) is perhaps the most beautiful lake in Italy IMO. Another gorgeous walking area ...
If you are fit and into serious hiking there are many more challenging routes (- including the Vie Ferrate). Most of the resorts also offer guided walks with mountain guides.
Here are some links you might find of interest:

As you can see, the possibities are endless in this wonderful area.
Let me know if I can be of more help ...

Hello Steve
Thank you once again for all the lovely info - I will digest it tonight when I get home! No, I'm not a serious hiker - I do love walking and have lots of stamina but wouldn't want to set off for an all day hike into the middle of no-where - I like to stay within shouting distance of civilisation!!
I hope you have a great holiday - can I look forward to a post about it when you get back? (My email is [email protected] should you want to send me any more info you discover during your hol that you think might be helpful to me next summer!) With best wishes, Pam
