Website for women--answers to the what to wear in each country

Don't need to ask here any more. Here is a website that is alphabetized by country with comments on appropriate clothing.

Isn't "journeywoman" the website that advised women traveling alone to carry their orange luggage tags, which are meant to let people know you are a solo traveler..Their idea is so other like minded travelers will get together ( I guess) but it really just targets the traveler as alone.
Julie..I think it is more fun to ask and get answers than to read it all in one neat package on that website LOL

That's a great site.Thanks.

i_am_kane Apr 14th, 2006 10:56 AM

I agree with Scarlett...it is implied that the woman is traveling along.

However, lots of good advice. I passed it on to my DILs.

kismetchimera Apr 14th, 2006 11:51 AM

Thanks for the web site Julie..I must admit that some posts were quite funny.

Especially one that said that in Italy the Skirts must be Ankle Lenght and to bring deodorant because is hard to find..
Now give me a break..the lady never heard about the Profumeria, Upim, the Rinascente to buy these so hard to find deodorants?

suze Apr 14th, 2006 01:15 PM

While interesting (i guess) realize that website is a compilation of people's personal opinions, just like Fodor's forum. There's no magic about what the women post and we may or may not agree with the advice.

I would rather ask here because my travel style is more Fodors than Journeywoman.

I'm with Kismet, they always make it seem as if Italian and French women do not shave or wear deoderant. Some don't as in the USA :)

Scarlett Apr 14th, 2006 01:29 PM

So true, cigale..especially noticeable in Portland these days LOL

Neopolitan Apr 14th, 2006 01:40 PM

"they always make it seem as if Italian and French women do not shave or wear deoderant."

Well they have to make sure the baguette tucked under their arm won't slip away or taste like chemicals!

esm Apr 14th, 2006 01:43 PM

Interesting. They don't show dates for any of the posts. So apart from suggestions for appropriate clothing for a country, you can't tell "what's in".

I haven't looked at all of the countries but the first post in France section was funny. Couldn't figure out why she wanted to repel people!

Scarlett Apr 14th, 2006 01:49 PM

LOL ...in France----No skin! The more conservative you dress the stronger you appear" and people only wear leather to the grocery store?

Did Muffie write this?

esm Apr 14th, 2006 01:54 PM

And Amber (from France) says to wear "tame" skirt and top!

suze Apr 14th, 2006 02:16 PM

There was similar amusing advice right here on Fodors from that one author in residence (Lea_Lane) who wrote abook about female solo travel. That you should wear a scarf to cover your hair, and don't wear makeup to avoid unwanted attention, etc. Clearly she travels in different parts of the world than I do.

cigalechanta Apr 14th, 2006 02:28 PM

"Did Muffie write this,"Lol, don't you remember she wore her squeky leather pants on the plane?
Scarlett, you gotta love that girl!!!

amp322 Apr 14th, 2006 02:34 PM

Anyone read the US postings? lol! Someone who went to NY warned not to wear Birkenstocks to the Rainbow Room!!!
:-)) !!

FainaAgain Apr 14th, 2006 03:24 PM

Can it be a humorous website?

Scarlett Apr 14th, 2006 06:33 PM

LOL, yes, mimi!
Suze, thanks for reminding me of that, the great Solo Traveler novel ..snort!
There have been trip reports on here by women traveling alone, they are brilliant and not once do they dwell on the fact that they are on their own...and they would be the ones I would take tips from, the ones who do it naturally and with fun..with make-up LOL

tondalaya Apr 14th, 2006 06:37 PM

Sheeto-I break all the rules.

Neopolitan Apr 14th, 2006 06:39 PM

Or the poster who said never to take a sweater to LA in May.

StCirq Apr 14th, 2006 06:53 PM

Boy, if ever there were a website wth stereotypes about what to wear in Europe, that's it.

I just do not GET why ordinary people who presumably get up in the morning and clothe themselves for the day ahead at whatever it is they'll be doing can't do the same on vacation in Europe.

Journeywoman, for example, would have you think that to go to Paris you need to dress all in black...well, sure, if you want to look like a Bedouin...

When I go to Paris I dress in what I'd dress in here, in the States. I like clothes. I like to look good. I wear what I think looks good on me, in all different colors and textures. I've learned a thing or two about scarves from spending so much time in France, so yes, I do a lot with scarves, but really, I don't invest a lot of time in thinking about what I'm going to wear on vacation. I'm going to wear MY clothes that I enjoy and that look good on me and that are comfortable and take the ones that take up the least amount of space in the suitcase. And if I get there and find I've not got the right something for some occasion, I go shop and buy it. It's really so simple...
