I have searched extensively for Venice tide info for more than a couple of days ahead and have found nothing. I finally went down to the local navigation store and looked them up for the period that we are planning on being there which is April 1, 2, 3 & 4 so I have that if it will help. Otherwise the publication is the British Admiralty Tide Tables, NP202-03 Vol. 2.
|
The british tables will not apply unless it has some sort of worlwide coverage.Tides vary by location on the globe.Rr
|
British Admiralty Tide Tables, NP202-03 Vol. 2. covers Venice.
|
Are the british tide tables on the web?
Otherwise it dosn't answer the original question.
|
Aqua alta does occur outside of nov.to Feb.
dates. Seen it in april and October myself.
|
As ANY weather event, it is NOT possible to foresee exactly when the high tide in Venice will stop. When i was in Venice i asked the tourist office near San Marco Square and they told me so (high tide from nov to end of february). If then in october and in April the weather is bad and there are days when the sea rises, is something that cannot be predicted.
What i can say is that IF the high tide in Venice occurs in April, (from what I understood that's when Rick is going to go), there is nothing to worry about. Venice has lived this phenomenon for years and years and they know how to face the problem.
|
I wasn't worrying. We will all survive but you may not want to wear your best leather shoes to San Marco when Aqua Alta is predicted. In the Months mentioned aqua alta occurs nearly daily or twice a day.
|
Is it possible to buy cheap rubber boots to slog around Venice? I don't want to take up valuable packing space with big boots unless absolutely necessary.
|
If there is an Aqua Alta, is there somewhere that is good to visit instead of San Marco square at that time, while you wait for low tide? I understand it is only low areas around San Marco that are affected? Perhaps the Accademia for a few hours until the tide retreats?
|
Good morning, Heather
Was in Venice a year ago last November
and were able to purchase rubber boots,
at a shoe store, would think these would
be carried by any shoe store, recall
they run about 20,000ITL. Did leave
these in the hotel room when we left
as they were impractible to pack for
home, however did find out a checkout
thqt the hotel has a stock of boots for
use by the quests, naturally upon request. Might ask your hotel if they
do have boots and get them when you hear
the sirens blow...
Richard of LaGrange Park, IL
Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..

Thank you so much for the reply, Richard. Perfect idea to check with the hotel if the tide's up. Have never been to Venice during that time so kind of looking forward to it. They blow sirens for warnings? Sounds very interesting.

Hi CH,
The high tides aren't that deep. They put boardwalks on St Marks Square and other very low places. The water is only a few inches deep.

You can bring along some trash bags, put your feet into them and tie them around your legs. That's what many Venetians do.
