Weather in Spain and Italy in fall or springtime

I know, I know; who can predict the weather! But I'll ask anyway. Is it usually rainy or cold in springtime or fall in Spain and Italy? Or is it more likely to be decent at least part of the time, so that if we were vacationing then we wouldn't be in terrible weather all the time?!

Very broad question considering the vast geographical differences there are within each country. Some areas could be snowing while others beach time and others in between.

Do you have a specific area you were planning to visit?

I live in Italy and my several years of experience thus far has been that Italy is surprisingly rainy in the Spring, and a bit drier in the fall.

What you need to think about is:

How much are the places I am planning to go "outdoors" places that depend on good weather to enjoy them?

People plan to go to a town like Lucca in Italy in the rainy season without much realizing that the enjoyment of Lucca is mainly about strolling *outdoors* through the town, and its walls. That is less fun in a slicker and umbrella.

If you are thinking of spending just a few days in a destination like Amalfi or le Cinque Terre, you can spend a lot of money to get totally rained out in Spring and anytime after the fall solstice.

But if you are talking about when to visit Rome, Florence, Venice, Napoli, Bologna, or any of Italy's great cities, it scarcely matters what the weather is. You will find plenty to enjoy indoors.

I like wunderground.com to learn about historical weather patterns.

We went to Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Cinque Terre and Venice from Oct. 7- 23, 2008 and had 14 days of no rain fabulous weather. The very last day it misted in Venice. I guess we were lucky but it seems a good time to go!

Historical weather patterns and personal experiences really don't mean anything. Before I lived in italy, I visited in October and got drenched! For days on end.

This year, Italy experienced downpours through most of May and much of June.

This week, Genoa was the hottest city in Europe!

If bad weather -- wet or hot or whatever -- will ruin your trip to Italy, pick another trip.

Based on the past 14 years statistics:

In Málaga in the south of Spain you can expect 20-25°C, eight hours of sun daily and three days with rainfall in the last to weeks of April. The last two weeks of October, you can expect 22-26°C, six hours of sun daily and four days with rainfall.

In San Sebastián in the north you can expect 13-19°C, five hours of sun daily and eight days with rainfall in the last to weeks of April. The last two weeks of October, you can expect 15-22°C, five hours of sun daily and six days with rainfall.

Hello?

You can't "expect" any thing from the weather, unless perhaps you look at a 3-day forecast.

Presumably everybody knows the general difference between winter/summer, fall/spring. Yes?

How much will it rain during your vacation if you take it during fall or spring? Nobody knows, and there is no data in the world that can even roughly lead you to "expect" sun or rain on the days you are traveling.

zeppole,

OP is of course perfectly aware of this. Your postings regarding this theme knock in open doors, but it somehow seems to be important...

At this point in time, the best you can do is look at historical averages--here's another website www.weatherbase.com At least you will know what the average high and low temps, rainfall, etc. are in the months you will be there for general planning purposes. Then start checking the 10-day forecasts when you get close to your travel date. But even then you can't be certain.

Depends on what part you're going to.

We found May to be perfect for Italy - warm but not hellishly hot and not the huge mobs of tourists yet. June starts getting more crowded. Late Sept/early Oct is usually good too.

We have don Andalusia and Madrid in end April and it was plenty warm for swimming in the south (highs in the mid 80s) - but it would probably be kind of chilly if you go to the Atlantic coast.

Basically these counties have warm/hot climates and IMHO late April/May and late Sept Oct are great times to visit. I might be kind of hesitant about early March or late November.
