Weather in southern Germany mid-April?

I'm planning on taking a trip to Europe in April 2013. I've been researching and would really love to see Munich and the Bavarian area. What I'm not sure about is the weather and if it would be a negative on our trip. I understand it's probably not gonna be perfect, sunny, seventy degree weather, however I don't want the weather to be blistering cold either. I enjoy some cold and am fine with layering coats and sweaters. So what do you think? Will it be manageable or unbearable?

It would be as normal to have sunny, seventy degree weather in April as it would be to have one of the last fresh layers of snow.
Fact is: April has volatile westher. You can ignore statistics. Those are totally useless in areas where stable weather conditions are an exemption from the rule. April has been almost hot this year. And we had a foot of snow 5 years ago.
Bring layers as planned. Plus a warm/rainproof jacket and a sweater.

If you are in the mountains it will still be cold. If not, the weather will vary - but 70 wold be kind of warm - but there will likely be rainy and grey days.

70 is a quite normal temperature in Germany in April. Also in Southern Germany. Where it is, aside from the higher elevations around Garmisch or Berchtesgaden, for example in Munich usually milder than in Berlin where winters are colder and summers hotter.

Yes, you will do well with layers and rainproof coat and shoes. It could be 70 degrees one day and cold rain/snow on the next day. Classic spring-like weather is usually the norm when I'm home in southern Germany. There will be flowers and trees blooming around the area. I'd expect moderate temperatures and weather similar to Seattle and Portland, in the spring.

... and if you don't like the weather, wait for half an hour. April weather is proverbial.

You will most likely experience a mix of everything. Prepare for all extremes between snow and early summer, ignore all statistics and ignore all reports that are based on one single visit because every year is different. Enjoy spring!

Thanks for all your responses!! so you think I should keep it in my itinerary?

Why not?

Germany and Austria take good care to clear the roads and keep them passable. The driving shouldn't be a problem. April weather and weather in the mountains, as others have pointed out, can be iffy no mater where you are. Chances are good you will be dazzled by early spring beauty. Go for it.

We had a snow storm in Garmisch one year on May 18. But, I still would go that time of year.
