weather in Scotland in June

We are going to Scotland at the end of June. Looking at the long range forecast, it appears the average temperature is in the 60's F. I guess we're wondering what to pack. I was thinking Scotland weather was similar to central New York, but 60's seems chilly. Any suggestions/tips on the weather and what to pack?

No such thing for the British Isles. The weather is nothing like central NY State. The UK is an island and the weather is totally changeable. Daytime temps could be in the 50's or the 70's (occasionally even the 80's) and everything in between. Could be dry, windy/cool, wet -- or all three.

The way to pack is mix/matchable layers. You won't need a heavy coat but you probably will need a jacket of some sort. Light weight layers are warmer and give you more flexibility. You will want sturdy shoes

Thanks, our weather is changeable too, we just had 90 & humid yesterday and will go down to 60 by tomorrow but usually by the end of June we can count on upper 70's or 80.

In Scotland we often get 4 seasons in one day......If you get over 70 in the Highlands then count yourself lucky....

Variety is key. Don't underestimate that one part of your trip it could be 50s and freezing rain with the wind whipping off the North Sea, and another part could be sunny and maybe just maybe hit 68-72!

We went to Scotland in June and had just about every type of weather imaginable. We hiked in the Highlands in freezing drizzle and strolled Edinburgh in bright warm sun. Bring short- and long-sleeved shirts, a fleece zip-up, and a waterproof lightweight jacket that will fit over all the rest, preferably longer length to help keep your upper legs dry. And waterproof shoes!

Most of Scotland is on a latitude north of Hudson's Bay. It gets warmed by the Gulf Stream, but by the same token, gets a lot of wet air off the Atlantic, when it's not getting cold air coming down from the Arctic, or the tail end of warm air coming up from the Sahara. Hence the unpredictability.

A lot depends on how much you intend to do outdoors and out of the cities.

"gets a lot of wet air off the Atlantic"

And the wind has had 3000 miles to get up some energy so it can be "quite blowy".

....Most of Scotland is on a latitude north of Hudson's Bay...

Of course, that means that in June it hardly gets dark at all.
You have lots of hours for sightseeing

As for clothes, I agree with hausfrau but I'd add a lightweight jumper or cardigan. Of course you could buy one there. You might get something nice in cashmere in the sales

A fleece with a windproof outershell is of more use - even in June. You'll definitely need raingear unless the weather gets even more weird than normal - though given the weather over the past few years weird is the new normal.

As for what the weather will be at the end of June - ask us in early July.

It's 25 degrees here in Aberdeen today. Who knows what it's like in Orkney?

Weather in Scotland is nothing like weather in New York. Have you looked at a map? do you see how far north Scotland is? Scotland is WAY north of Maine - on a line with the middle of Canada. (Except for the artificial warming of the gulf stream it would probably have permafrost.)

We have been a coupe of times in the summer and it has always been cool and rainy. One July it was in the high 40's, rainy and windy (it had been about 85 - granted a heat wave - when we left London 4 days before).

Patrick and NYTrav are right -- most of Scotland is well north of Edmonton, the most populated city in North American north of the mainland US/Canada border. Plan for 40s to 60s.

P.S., that "25 degrees" Sheila mentioned is Celsius -- that's 77 in US terms and if betting on that is like picking the green #s in roulette: you may hit occasionally, but you'll fail a lot.
