Weather in Scotland/Edinburgh area) in Sept.?
 

We are planning a trip to Scotland Sept 8-16th with day trips of 75-80 miles+/- in many directions from that base of operation. We may decide to even move hotels/inns for 3 of the days.
What temperatures should we expect in the 11AM-3PM period-can 65F degrees be a reasonable expection and 55F at night? Will we be in drizzling conditions for several hours during the day most days? Thanks.

All joking apart, this is Scotland, you know? The weather is very unpredictable.

Bring clothes to layer with and be preaperd for a downpour or an Indian Summer. Either is possible- it should not be TOO cold.

We visited Edinburgh last September, but more like the last week of the month.

The weather was pretty nice, actually. It was cool pretty much every morning and breezy pretty much every day. This made a couple of the mornings (9am-10am or so) a bit on the chilly side. So wear a jacket and a cap. Although we encountered little rain while there, it did get cloudy most days. Not for the entire day, by any means.

We took one bus tour through the Highlands and the weather that day was absolutely gorgeous, very sunny, comfortable temps (mid-upper 60s F). A trip to St. Andrews was plesant, a bit cooler, and a 30 minute shower in the mid-afternoon. Other than that, breezy and partly cloudy.

We stayed at a B&B and followed the advice of our hosts as to the recommended attire for the day. And they didn't fail us once.

OK - we've had weather questions before -- but I don't think I've ever seen a "what will it be like at a specific time of day" question.

Where are you from? Where ever it is, you are almost guaranteed to have more predictable weather than in Scotland.

Count on warm-ish, cool-ish, cold, clear, blustery, rainy, and glorious. All are possible and most are probable.

I'd be wary of reports about a single visit - whatever iowan experienced could have been totally different if they had been there one day earlier or later.

(BTW - sheila lives in Scotland so her info will be the most accurate - but as you can see even she can't give you a prediction)

Cold, warm, wet, dry, clear, misty, snowy. And the afternoon will be much the same!
Having lived in Scotland for over 30 years the only things I know about the weather is not to trust any forecasts, and expect anything. I was in Edinburgh one June, and woke up to snow, and I've watched football in March in my shirtsleeves because it was so warm. Go figure!
