Weather in late May?
We wil be in the Bavarian Alps and Salzburg/Innsbruck region in late May. Will many of the hiking trails be open and accessible at that time, or will the higher elevations still be mostly snow covered? It seems that many of the gondolas and lifts are closed at that time. Is that correct? Will flowers have started blooming in the lower areas? We've been to Switzerland in that same timeframe and know that some areas there just aren't generally in spring/summer mode yet. Is the German and Austrian region the same?
We ask this as we look to revise our itinerary for our trip. Trying to figure out good places (and how long) to stay at some of these smaller towns now that we will be renting a car. All of your advice has been very helpful so far. Thanks again. |
We were in Germany/Bavaria area and Salzburg in late May and the weater varied. I'm cold all the time so I brought long sleeves etc. and I ended up buying a couple tee shirts and sandals when I was there because it was warm SOME OF THE TIME. Other days it was cooler and rained other days. We took the gondola to the top of Zupspitze (spelling??) near Garmisch and it was snowing and their was NO view at all.
So, I would take clothes you can layer along with a spring jacket. We also took cheap rain ponchos; which we threw away before we came back home. |
So it sounds like the hiking will be limited?

We also we to the top of Eagles Nest and it was real nice weather, and also nice weather in Salzburg, so I would take the hiking shoes/boots etc.
