Weather in Bernese Oberland in June
 

I know that any particular week or year can vary a lot, but does anyone have general guidance about weather temperatures in late June in the Bernese Oberland (especially Murren, Wengen, etc.?) We've been hiking in this area in late September, but not June.

We have our hotels, but any other insights (hiking suggestions; day trips; etc.) are most welcome.

We spent the first week of July in BO in 2006. Every day was perfect except the last which was overcast and soft drizzle. Every other day was sunny and clear, often reaching 30C - quite hot and humid even for us Australians.

IN GENERAL, June is very pleasant: sunny, not too hot or too cold and not too rainy. However, this is an El Nino year, so it could be snowing heavily in June.... All kidding aside, there have been several Junes in the past few years when temps have been quite warm to downright hot, but certainly liveable in the mountains.

You will usually find snow patches on some of the walking trails, and they can be a bit muddy as well, so good waterproof shoes would be in order, and gloves, a hat, a waterproof warm jacket, and/or dressing in layers would be helpful as temps can really drop quickly if it becomes cloudy.

Pluses are that the wildflowers are in bloom covering the fields, and cows are up in the mountain pastures. All in all a very good time of year to be in the Bernese Oberland, IMO.

Take a look at weatherbase.com and see Latuerbrunnen, and remember that for every 1,000 feet in elevation, temps will drop by about 3.5 degrees F. Wengen is at 1800 meters, Murren at about the same; the weatherbase.com will give you the elevation for Latuerbrunnen and you can extrapolate. If you go up to the top of the Jungfrau it will of course be quite cold and still snow covered.

Last year 2nd week of June in Grindelwald (daytripping to surrounding area) I bought a pair of hiking shorts because I mispacked and it was hot during the day. I think I looked at historic averages and the forecast before I went and it was much hotter than I expected.

For a little change of pace, you can train back to Interlaken Ost and, across the street, catch the boat for Lake Brienz. Get off at the town of Brienz and catch the coordinating bus to the Swiss Open Air Museum. This is a mini-Switzerland with houses in the style of the different cantons plus demonstrations of traditional crafts.

Brienz itself has a wood-carving tradition and the boat ride is very scenic.

I went during the first week of June in 2002. It was in the 90's in the alps, and about 101-103 in some of the lower swiss and french cities. You just never know.
