Weather early Nov Berlin, Vienna, Prague and Budapest
A friend and I will be traveling to Berlin, Vienna, Prague and Budapest at end of October to the first week of November. Never been to Europe. What is the weather like at this time and how to dress for this weather? A windproof/waterproof sports jacket or a long wool jacket? We both heard it is bone chilly in Prague and esp. Budapest.

All of those are on the Central european plain - and at that time of year will be chilly - probably not really cold yet - but quite often rainy and damp. I would go for a leather jacket vs a full winter coat, but bring a couple of sweaters and turtlenecks to layer if you need it.
In terms of comparison think New York or Chicago - not International Falls - but definitely not the carolinas either. |
You might keep track of the temperature difference using wunderground.com. Another Fodorite gave the site to me and I now see that the areas we're heading to in September and October are about 20 degrees cooler than home.
We're planning on layering our clothing and not taking heavy coats or jackets - just lighter jackets that we can wear something long sleeved under. Have a great trip!! |
Bring a rain- and windproof jacket and something warm, a fleece is best, to wear underneath. Essential. Prepare for the ugliest and most unpleasant of all weather conditions: rain, strong wind and temperatures slightly above zero.

quokka -
Not sure where you're from but what you're describing is not the worst possible weather. That's what we get all the time in November. And in the middle of winter we get snow - lots of snow - and temps that are below zero at night - and that's zero farenheit - not centrigrade. |
The weather is about the same as Boston or Buffalo in November

Thank you everyone! I live in San Francisco, so it's great to hear responses. I will be prepared

I would imagine weather could vary quite a bit at that time of year.
For Budapest, we were there in late Oct/early Nov in '04. I wore a light suede jacket around and was fine. Took it off most of midday out walking around and was just in shirt sleeves. It was brisk at times, but not damp. But would think that could easily change from year to year. If you had a couple of extra layers to put on just in case, you'd likely be ok. |
