Weather concerns for Sept/Oct trip to Germany and Austria

I have two (ff) tickets on reserve for Sept 26th through Oct 10th. Now I realize that Oct 15 is the cut off date for using fewer miles to get to Europe on AA. I can get seats on the 17th of Oct. I have checked the average temps for five of our key locations. The difference is about 10 degrees. (50's versus 60's for highs)How likely are we to run into snow and bad roads in the mountainous areas the first two weeks of Oct? I have enough miles for the earlier trip, but I can always hold them for the next trip. Help me with this obsessional behavior. PJK

Hi PJK -

Snow will not be a problem. If it does happen to snow, all but the most minor roads will get cleared off quickly.

I should mention that a very few roads close completely during the winter - eg the Grossglocknerstrasse is closed November to April I think. But that shouldn't affect your trip.

This is a wonderful area for driving. Have fun!

Snow not very likely - but it will be cool - and you WILL get rain.

Hi PJK,
We've been to Bavaria, Austria and the Dolomites 4 times in the last 6 years in October, anywhere from the first week to the last day. We wouldn't go any other time. We've experienced generally good weather on all the trips, especially last year. 60 to 70 was the typical daytime temp., but we did have a day or two in the upper 70's and one in the low 80's. You never know. Never had a snow day though. If you are going from berchtesgaden to Fussen via Innsbruck and have an extra hour, I highly recommend stopping and seeing Hall in Tirol (just east of Innsbruck), which is a beautiful old town (IMO) and very easy on/off from the main highway.

Thanks for the responses. We've decided to save the extra miles for another trip. The risk of slightly lower temps is worth taking. I can hardly wait for this trip. It has been two years since we have been to Europe. That's way too long! PJK
