Weather - London, Amsterdam, Rhine Valley(St Goar), Engelberg(Lucerne), Innesbruck, Italy, France

Hello Everyone,

I am going to the above countries from mid Sept to the 1st of Oct. I have heard many different stories as how the weather is in Europe during this time. Some have said that is COLD COLD COLD (mid 40s)...some have said that it is in mid to high 60s. I am also told that it is hot in Italy during that time as well. I am told that it is scarf and gloves weather...then I am told that it is a crisp chill but just sweater weather...what is the real story? What is the weather like during that time?

You want to know what the weather is like in seven countries spread over half of Europe?? It is a safe bet in that huge area that somewhere along the way you will get hot/warm/cool/cold/rain/wind/fair.

(A whole other question is how you are getting to 7 countries in what looks like a two week trip - but that is for another day . . . )

janisj...on a tour for 19 days. Yes...i am asking for 7 countries...unfortunately i have lot of different information...conflicting information. How we are getting through that many countries:

http://www.contiki.com/en-US/Tours/E.../Itinerary.htm

So...with that said...if there are people out there on this forum that live or are from these various countries...what is the typical weather like in your country during this time.

Have you looked at the trip planner feature on wunderground.com? That should help you determine what to expect.

Hi Tara,

Thanks for the recommendation...your site is consistent with weather.com.

hckypris98 - It sounds like a shorter version of a tour that I took many years ago. Your guess for the weather is as good as anybody's. It could be in the 40's for the northern parts, or up in the 60's. Your best bet is to pack for layering and you should be fine.

When I did my tour (with a company similar to Contiki), I really wished that I had packed something other than jeans and shorts. Now I travel with zip-off nylon pants but pack a pair of lightweight long-undies with them. The undies are light enough to stick in my shoulder bag if I might get cold, or if I'm too hot and want to change out of them. They dry overnight when you want to wash them (and on a tour of that scope you won't be having time to find a laundromat). Take layers for the top, including a fleece or microfiber jacket (pullover or zip-up) and a breathable rain jacket. You can always throw in a scarf (great for under your jacket if you're cold) and a lightweight pair of gloves. Outdoor stores usually have a good variety of lightweight long underwear that will both breathe and dry quickly. You could also try www.sierratradingpost.com or similar.

The key to your packing is going to be layering and flexibility. And just be aware that if you're planning to wash jeans and hang them to dry, the last time I tried that in a hotel room it took almost three days for them to dry completely.

Have a great time on your trip. The one I took somehow planted the travel bug in me and now here I am living in Germany for the second time!

Nowhere on that list is going to be cold as you have been told by someone. Not unless you go very high in the mountains. The end of September could be hot in Italy and France. London and Amsterdam usually have pleasant temperatures that time of year (last year it was over 25 celsius late September in Amsterdam); I really cannot imagine needing more than a raincoat and a sweater in any of these destinations in September. Certainly no scarves and gloves.

For places like Innsbruck, one might very well need scarves and gloves. Even w/ daytime temps possibly in the 60's it could easily be in the 40's at night. Depends a lot on what you are used to whether that is "cold" or not.

You're talking about an entire continent. The weather will be all over the map. (Your question is like asking what the weather is in the US - it will be different in NYC, in Fl, in Arizona and in the Rockies).

That said - you are going late summer and early fall - and I wouldn;t expect it to be cold exept at the top of mountains. But the temps could easily range from 50's at night to 90s in the day time.

And some days it WILL rain.
