Is it alright for a middle age woman to wear jeans and a nice shirt or sweater during the daytime in Istanbul?

It depends when you go. If it's July you might be a bit sweaty in a sweater.

With jeans and shirt/sweater you will perfectly blend into the locals (unless you wear white tennis shoes).
