I know this 7 years too late and a dollar short but I would wear a sign that reads:

I live in NYC and I tell people if they don't want to look like a tourist carry a Duane Reade bag filled with toilet paper. Duane Reade is a local drugstore chain. And if you have toilet paper people will either think you live here or a tourist with a problem that they don't want to get close to.
