We will smell like billy goats and look like old hags

Lets face it folks.
But I would rather arrive alive.

P_M Aug 13th, 2006 06:46 AM

:-D

Viajero2 Aug 13th, 2006 06:51 AM

Some hotels are already expanding the room toiletries. Some Marriotts and Wyndhams are starting to place small tubes of toothpaste, deodorant, and hair gels in the rooms.

Steph Aug 13th, 2006 07:00 AM

And what a good excuse to sample the products of the country you are visiting. Does anyone know if stores in Europe sell those travel-size items
we see here in many stores?

AR Aug 13th, 2006 07:03 AM

If you believe this forum, we don't even have soap in Europe. :@)

platzman Aug 13th, 2006 07:12 AM

I am hoping they run out of shaving cream and razors in Europe. I've long been looking for an excuse to avoid shaving. My wife and daughters don't approve of the "3-day hangover look".

suze Aug 13th, 2006 07:57 AM

heck with the food service, they will just have to expand the in-flight store.

Ronda Aug 13th, 2006 08:13 AM

Just check your toiletries. If you don't want to check your carry-on with the toiletries inside, use a smaller suitcase or or gym bag. If you are worried about things breaking, wrap the toiletry bag in bubble wrap or a pair of pj's. Still doesn't solve the "I don't want to check anything" syndrome which my husband has a bad case of.

rubysplace Aug 13th, 2006 09:11 AM

We are flying from Phoenix through Chicago and Heathrow to Rome. We are splitting our check in things into two bags with a bit of each other's stuff in each bag (hopefully they both won't be lost) and my new carry on is a lovely large paper bag from Ann Taylor's Loft store! It has nice strong handles and I am going to pack it with "allowables" (snacks, books, magizines) that can be tossed along with the bag once we get to London and change to Alitalia. We are going to make this an adventure.. more stories to share..

Seamus Aug 13th, 2006 09:14 AM

Something that has not been mentioned, perhaps because it is so simple as to seem self apparent, is to be sure that your toiletries are packed in sealed waterproof containers within your checked lugage - aka the infamous zip lock bags - and not just a dopp kit type bag. The changing pressures during a flight can play havoc with toiletries, and leaks are a real possibility. I learned the hard way.

nessundorma Aug 13th, 2006 09:19 AM

I think some women who slather themselves with make-up and "fragrance" before deplaning don't realize they end up looking like old hags and smelling worse than billy goats.

John Aug 13th, 2006 09:25 AM

I have the opposite syndrome. I want to check everything and carry nothing!!

kismetchimera Aug 13th, 2006 09:37 AM

Me too John, I like to be carefree when I travel.Besides I am not very strong and without a Gentleman to help me I could not lift my carryon anyway.

SeaUrchin Aug 13th, 2006 09:40 AM

I don't get it, why would someone putting on makeup and perfume after flight look like an old hag and and smell bad?

kismetchimera Aug 13th, 2006 09:44 AM

Perhaps because the heavy make up will cake in your face and the mascara may run and you will ending up looking like a racoon?
I dont understand the part of smelling bad if you use perfume.

SeaUrchin Aug 13th, 2006 09:52 AM

lol, but if you put the makeup on just before deplaning you should still look fresh.

annieladd Aug 13th, 2006 09:55 AM

Per Seamus's last suggestion, isn't that an issue whether your toiletries are in your carry on or checked luggage? Isn't the change in pressure the same in the cabin as the luggage hold? Just asking?? annieladd (queen of the zip lock bags!)

SpecialK Aug 13th, 2006 10:07 AM

What would an asthmatic such as myself do?? I hear that London allows NO liquids on board and my asthma pump has liquid inside of it. There is no way I could endure a flight from London to LA without my pump. If I were to have an asthma attack on the plane,I would have nothing to stop it and THAT IS SCARY TO THINK ABOUT! I can just picture myself being denied boarding and wondering how I would ever get home because to board the plane would be too risky. But then again, I'd be in the great city of London so I guess it would not be too bad :-)

P_M Aug 13th, 2006 10:10 AM

I don't think it's about the pressurization, I think it's about the way luggage gets tossed around by the baggage handlers. Also, your suitcase could end up at the bottom of the pile so all of some of your stuff could leak.

SpecialK, I believe they said Rx meds are allowed, even to/from London.

SpecialK Aug 13th, 2006 10:19 AM

Thanks P_M
I have visioned myself over and over pleading with agents to let me on board or to please call my doctor!

SeaUrchin Aug 13th, 2006 10:19 AM

I know they put animals in the hold so the pressure has to be the same. I agree it is the way our luggage is thown about and stacked that may make something break.

I double plastic bag things that will ruin something if they open up (I started to say explode, oops!)

Seamus Aug 13th, 2006 11:54 AM

annieladd, you are right - the caveat applies to both both checked and carry on items. P_M, it's both pressurization effect and rough handling that create the risk. Either one alone can casue the spill, both together increase the chances. Ever have a tube of something that you carried on the plane seem a bit inflated after the flight? That increases the internal pressure against the container, which reduces the amount of mechanical force required to cause it to burst.

Underhill Aug 13th, 2006 12:08 PM

I'll bet celebrities deplaning will be hiding their faces...

P_M Aug 13th, 2006 12:19 PM

Hi, Seamus. Your comments about pressurization brought back a strange memory. I usually don't put on make-up while on the plane, but this was an emergency situation. ;-) I opened a tube of liquid eye liner and it blew!! YIKES, brown liquid went everywhere!! As it was an emergency so I have no regrets. But what's a gal to in the event of a cosmetic emergency if these rules do not change?? This is an outrage!! >:O

kismetchimera Aug 13th, 2006 12:26 PM

Ladies REJOICE, we are allowed to bring a solid lipstick on the plane..

SECURITY LEVEL REMAINS THE SAME, TSA REFINES AND CLARIFIES BAN

Small doses of liquid medications permitted
Shoes removal required
Low blood sugar treatments including glucose gel for diabetics permitted
Clarifications include: aerosols prohibited, solid lipstick and baby food permitted.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) today announced it will permit small doses of liquid medications through the security checkpoint and onboard airplanes, a refinement from the original ban, which was implemented on August 10. TSA will also now require all passengers to remove their shoes so they may be X-rayed with their carry-on bags to enhance efficiency in the screening process and eliminate confusion for travelers

kismetchimera Aug 13th, 2006 12:29 PM

Here is the web site;

JJ5 Aug 13th, 2006 12:30 PM

Good one, JandaO. SO TRUE.

Actually, I have never understood the heft of the gook that most people (especially women- yes I admit it) take with them routinely. I don't, never did.

kismetchimera, the perfume onboard offends a lot of people. The perception is NO odor is infinitely better than perfume. And I agree.

Totally agree about heavy makeup and full boat cosmetics wear during long term plane travel- the very young may pull it off without looking like a rained on water color map. Others just don't.

Marianna Aug 13th, 2006 12:32 PM

Even the zip lock bags with toiletries in them (mousse, hair gel, shampoo, etc.)can't guarantee that they will prevent leakage. My sister once had the mousse container explode and the zip lock bag became filled with foamy mousse and then it exploded - all over her clothing inside her checked suitcase. A separate bag (or perhaps putting those items in the front zippered compartment away from clothing) seems to make a lot of sense.

Rubysplace, you have a great attitude!

Happy and safe travels to everyone!

annieladd Aug 13th, 2006 12:54 PM

Not to turn this into a makeup discussion, but I have recently switched from liquid foundation to mineral makeup (Jane Iredale). It will come in handy on the plane, both with regard to being in it overnite, as well as bringing it on board. Just a thought for any determined to wear makeup. annieladd

Underhill Aug 13th, 2006 12:57 PM

Is it safe to put aerosol items, such as hair spray, in checked luggage?

Marianna Aug 13th, 2006 01:04 PM

PS: I do wear some makeup when I travel. I won't even go to the grocery store without moisturizer, a little blush or bronzer and some mascara. I do not think that I look like an old hag, even after a long plane trip. My husband would tell me!

Lately, I have tried a mineral, powdery makeup. The one I bought comes in a slim container with an attached brush. For me, it works well with a moisturizer under it so it might be good for a little touch up before landing at your destination - unless it isn't even allowed in your purse. Those face wash cloths in foil packets leave you skin clean and moisturized. Are those allowed?

Good thing I don't have a trip planned for a few months. Maybe the restictions will be let up a bit then.

sandi Aug 13th, 2006 01:28 PM

I doubt celebreties will be flying commercial.

mcnyc Aug 13th, 2006 01:46 PM

Sandi: They will...and they'll smell like billy goats and look like old hags, just like us. :D

tru2my2 Aug 13th, 2006 02:14 PM

I'm off to Brisbane in a few hours - I called Qantas this morning and inquired about my powder makeup - no can do. The chance of the powder being mixed with water and...well, you know.
Danger!

kismetchimera Aug 13th, 2006 02:27 PM

Marianna, you actually believe that your husband would tell you that you look like an old hag without make up?
I can picture him sleeping on the sofa..:)

I dont wear too much make up other than moisturizer and lipstick..But I need both of them, I probably will wear sunglasses on the plane..:)

hopingtotravel Aug 13th, 2006 02:35 PM

Learning the hard way: I was a college student on my first ever airplane flight--Portland OR to Juneau AK.
I had fingernail polish in my cutsey little Samsonite overnight case. It leaked. Can you imagine what a mess that was?
Ever since, any $50 Chanel cosmetics, etc, have gone in my carry-on. Let's see. We spent 36 hours on our last trip to Paris waiting for our luggage. So if you read about the "ugly" American in the future, I guess it would be me!!

annieladd Aug 13th, 2006 02:39 PM

Tru, my mineral makeup looks like a pressed powder (not loose). They won't let that on??? I'm happy to put it in checked luggage, I don't want to lose it, but I didn't think that would be a problem, I thought just liquids, gels, etc.

L84SKY Aug 13th, 2006 02:58 PM

The more I think about getting on the plane with very little, the more I like it.

I will miss the toothpaste though. I had thought about bringing some baking soda flavored with peppermint oil but I'm afraid a little bag of white powder, no matter how good it smells, might raise questions. Some strong peppermint tea and a good flossing will have to suffice.

Marianna Aug 13th, 2006 03:24 PM

Oh, yes, he would, Kismetchimera! I love him dearly, but he will tell me, in a nice amd loving way, if I have gained a pound or two or if I look tired, etc. Sofa? Never - we have been very happily married 36 years and never has a sofa has been between us! BTW, I give him constructive criticism, if needed, also! I guess I am on the old side compared to some of you here, but I work hard at NOT looking like a hag - flying or not!

Happy, lovely, and most importantly, safe travels to all!

Croque_Madame Aug 13th, 2006 03:49 PM

L84SKY: go to Magellans dot com and Search for Toothettes.

Looks kind of like foaming lollipops, but they might work.
