This is one more reason why we get the name of ugly Americans. In Paris the most cultured, fashionable urban center, your attire should be casual elegance thus wearing dressy sport clothes. The same thing you would wear in San Francisco, Boston or New York. To bad your parents didn't educate you to the right and wrong way to dress. If you do go to Paris, walk down Fauberg rue St. Honore and look in the shops plus <BR>watching the beautifully dressed men and woman walking on the street. Their wardrobes are lovely.

Marie, I just had to laugh at your lumping Boston in with New York, San Francisco, and, indirectly, Paris, in terms of style. Boston is totally frumpy - I should know, I live there!

As long as you stay in the bull dike quartier you should be fine. Barefoot will do as well.

I beg to differ that Boston is frumpy, since I work in Boston. However, although I also agree that this might be a troll message. I think that people should dress comfortably and appropriately. That means that if you are going to go to the Vatican, don't plan on wearing a halter top. Your shoulders have to be covered. <BR><BR>But, I don't see any problems with wearing jeans and sneakers on vacation either. I obviously wouldn't wear jeans and sneakers into Maxim's, but I have had coffee at the outdoor cafe at noon time and did wear just that.<BR><BR>Everyone has his/her own style, and it shouldn't have to be changed drastically because a person is going on vacation. Europeans do wear jeans and sneakers, however, their sneakers are not bright white.<BR><BR>I don't particularly care what anyone wears. What you wear is a function of how you look. Most fat folks look best in trench coats, regardless of the weather.<BR>If you are shapely, why not short, clingy shorts and a boob exposing shirt with a ranch bra -- you know herd 'em up and move 'em out? Maybe add a little wiggle to the walk. The French men will appreciate it.<BR>At least the American men will.<BR>

Fashionista - confess I do live in the burbs, but definitely not a Lane Bryant shopper. Like you, Tess (love it) and Barney's but Newton, where I live, is considered a sophisticated suburb, and I often bemoan the fact that I feel overdressed there. And even downtown, I don't often see lots of people I'd consider stylish. So maybe I should have just said "relatively frumpy," which, compared to other big cities, I still maintain Boston is.

I think most of you have your head buried. Paris is like anywhere else. If you feel like jeans wear them. Most Parisians do. Most people walking down the streets or riding the tube are not and I will repeat are not well dressed. The people responding on this broad are dreaming to think you dress casual elegance. Yes, there are frumps all over the world, but why would you use them for role models? Try to look your best is my motto. If every one on the metro is poorly dressed, you will feel a little better being stylish, no?

Some of the most hilarious postings are the snob wars, especially the catfights. Marie, your pretentious tirade is so funny I believe you are also a troll. Then the attempts to outdo each other regarding which upperclass shops that you buy your clothes in. This is sooo funny. My friends in Paris have style, but since thet aren't wealthy (most Parisiens are not) they just know how to throw on some jeans, leather shoes and a non-descript shirt, perhaps a scarf. The point is they know how to wear it. And many Parisiens shop at thrift stores - can you believe that? Keep 'em coming!

On my last trip to Paris, the lady "tour-guide" had on a sleeveless linen dress & obviously had never shaved under her arms. We had the same guide on different trips for 3 days & she wore this same dress every day. It was in the month of August & very hot. Why worry about jeans?

When I took my teenage daughter to Paris, she bought the Idiot's Guide to Paris. It has a great chapter on shopping. There are many good shopping streets with small botiques around the Forum des Halles. She found a nice suede jacket at a used store called Killiwatch (not sure on the spelling).<BR><BR>She brought shorts and sundresses but was surprised to find the weather in Paris more like San Francisco and wished she had brought more jeans.<BR><BR>If you don't want to attract unwanted attention, don't wear skimpy clothes. <BR><BR>TIP FOR PARENTS: If you don't want to spend your vacation shopping with teenagers, take a taxi from point A to point B. They are relatively inexpensive in Paris and Italy. Girls have no opportunity to stop and shop and you get them where you want to go. I know, because I almost went in every shoe store in Florence until I perfected the taxi technique. lol
