We want to eat our way through Tuscany

Staying in Tuscany, near Castellina in Chianti in two weeks. Will be day tripping to Siena, San Gim, Volterra and other nearby spots. Have only four days to spend and we have decided to pull out the stops. Seeking advice on best Tuscan dining experiences. Not necassarily the most outrageously expensive, but the best. Should I make reservations prior to the trip, say NOW? I read about Badia e Coltibuono, Le Logge in Siena, and a few places in Castellina but they seem heavily trafficked by tourists. Looking for some less known finds or am I being too uptight about the tourist thing? Also, would like to tour on horseback for an afternoon. Any suggestions?

If you'll be in Siena you MUST, yes I said MUST eat at the Cat & Dog. You'll find it heavily reccomended here on the Forum and after dining there this last May I heartily agree. Not outrageously expensive by any means. A bit of a splurge for my budget but worth every penny.

You don't get a menu. You get to eat whatever it is they're cooking that night. It was a seven course meal that was heaven from end to end. Very cozy, maybe half a dozen tables total. IF you're interested I'll dig up their phone number.

Hope your trip in Italy is as least half as wonderful as ours was.

I second the Cane eGato (the cat and the dog. It was the most memorable meal we ever had!!!! We made reservations when we got to Siena for that night and had no problem. There was only one other couple in the restaurant with us! Enjoy!!!

Grego,
Check out the May 15 issue of the Wine Spectator. You should be able to find it at the library. It has a huge section on Tuscany with some great suggestions.

Grego, Try these--I hope the tabs do not mess up too badly !

I have never been called ď BOB THE GOURMET. Most of the places
mentioned here are from others, including many of my former
clients. It is hard to get a bad meal in Italy, but these are special.

Thanks for the many tips - keep 'em coming! Bob, I an envious of your travel records, I keep business cards in a small book, but referencing gets to be a pain. Thanks. Also, any advise on horseback riding? Have been directed to Vescine?

If you are going to be in the area between Siena and Montalcino you have to go to the following for a meal. The best overall meal on our whole trip. It is in a medieval hamlet outside of Murlo called La Befa. 10 houses and this restaurant which is fabulous. It is called La locando del Catello. No tourists in sight. Order the aritchoke lasagne. You wonít be disappointed with this one. The town is really amazing, well it is not a town but a little square that is so peaceful. We actually found the info on it in the Rough Guide to Tuscany and Umbria but it didnít list a name for the restaurant. It is slightly out of the way but very worth it!! E-mail me if you want more details on how to get there.

Grego, That list was a pre-done page that I have prepared for my clients.
I am lazy and hate to retype each time.
Hope you can use it well.

Near Pienza, the guy from the company I took a fabolous tour with, brought me and my friend in a very nice
restaurant called "Lette de Luna" or something like that;
we had incredible food there. Pasta was fresh and handly made!!
I don't remember exactly where it was, but you can email them and ask for directions. Their address is www.toursaroundtuscany.com
They are always very kind with everybody and I'm sure they will help you.

Latte de Luna is actually right in the town of Pienza and we thought that it was extremely touristy, though the food was good (at the time... I got very sick that night) That is just my opinion though.
