I am sorry you had a bad experience. I think I understand, a bit, your hopes for the trip, as I am a CA girl born and raised currently living in Munich. This winter was much too long. We also dreamed of going somewhere warm for the Easter holidays. We were back and forth, but ultimately decided to just train to Paris, and not try to make weather a key (ideally positive) aspect. That being said, we are desperate to go somewhere warm on our next trip!

We spent last Sept in/around Split and had a nice time. We have also been to Ljubljana twice and really love that town. I say give those countries another shot at another time. I hope you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thank you again, everyone, for your comments. Slovenia and at least Zagreb and the Dalmatian coast of Croatia are still on the holiday list; we'd even like to see the west coast of Istria, as well.

annhig, I sometimes do not like sharing a bathroom with DH, much less a stranger. I would not have lasted three nights, either. And, while Ilka was stingy with Internet, our rental had a very new plasma television with over 500 channels in multiple languages to watch--no grey fuzz for us!

eluckhardt, I'm sure Paris was wonderful. I have visited the city in the heat of August, a wet and breezy autumn, and the greys of January and February and never had a bad time. My chance at "April in Paris" came up for later this month, to join DH for a couple of days, but alas, familial obligations will keep me in Vienna. Maybe next time.

This is the house we rented. I submitted a review to homeaway a few days ago but it has not yet been posted, although, curiously, a "5 star" review just appeared from someone who stayed in the house months before. http://www.homeaway.co.uk/p2009680

I think I remember reading that the reviews on homeaway are managed by the owners. That might explain why your review has not appeared.

Wow, what an unfortunate outcome to such a wonderfully planned adventure! I commend you for the humor with which you described your experiences.

I must admit that you made me especially grateful for my time in the area, when the weather was great and when it was because of the kindness of people in Istria (specifically, in Gračišće) that I learned that my car was leaking oil and found a way to get the car repaired at the rental company's expense and in a timely way.

I hope your future travels hold many happier moments..

Sorry to hear that the trip didn't live up to expectations. Rentals can be a crapshoot, for sure. I don't blame the owners as far as the dogs not being allowed upstairs or in the bedrooms and on furniture, but the internet service etc would be a dealbreaker for me.

If it helps, Berlin had horrid weather.

We headed to Portugal for this spring break and it was glorious for us 'Pragians'. The Portuguese, however, were all complaining.

Oh, and just to add, Slovenia is glorious, but not for a gray drive through.

MareeL, I hope that is not the case. The confirmation email I received from Homeaway indicated they had to confirm the review met their guidelines; however, in light of the suspicious "5 star" review that appeared for the house, you are probably correct.

SloJan, in communicating with Ilka (and all property owners when we travel with our dog), I double and triple confirm the rules for pets; we have rules for DDog at home, as well. She never mentioned additional restrictions until we arrived. We had no way to block the stairs, but thankfully our dog is a well-mannered Hound and is happy to spend most of his day snoozing when he's not out with us rather than roaming about looking to destroy something. We told DDog not to jump on the furniture, but covered the sofa with the blanket from the car, just in case.

Later this month I'm heading to Zurich for DD's honor orchestra festival. Fingers are crossed for a problem-free 36 hours!

Interesting. Under facilities, Internet now appears as "Internet..." and a pop-up window shows up saying that you get only a credit with some amount of time on it. At least there is more info available now for other potential renters so that they are not completely taken off guard like you all were. But I still don't think the info they post tells the real Internet very accurately (that you will need software to use it, that it is a very limited amount of time, etc)

I thought I would share an update. Our review has not been posted on Homeaway yet but it appears that Ilka has seen it. We received an email from her accusing us of telling "untruths," continuing to go on about how we should have asked "what kind" of Internet, and that she was going to consult with her lawyer regarding the next course of action.

A day later another email arrived from Ilka. She is now offering to refund our entire rental, IF we remove the review.

Very interesting! Like annhig, I sure wouldn't remove the review until you have the cash in hand, and golly gosh, why do I think it's unlikely that you'll see the money if you remove the review first? ;-)

I'm so sorry about your ruined holiday, and because you were so tricked. I got particulary angry whren I was reading a part of your post attached to the internet I agree with others that you shouldn't remove your review until you see the money. I wish you luck with your next jurney!

We decided to accept half of the rental return in exchange for a modified review (that still included the major criticisms), and posed that to the owners. So far they have not responded to us. We have inquired with Homeaway as well, as to why our review has not been posted, and they, too, have not yet responded.
