Thanks for some great responses and insight. Sounds like the Tuscany part of our plan is a no brainer...but I am rethinking the San Remo part. There are some opportunities for a month in Sicily...so we are going to explore that a bit. We had been to San Remo on a trip to Villefranche and loved the down home feel of things. It definately wasn't touristy!! Thanks for the replies.

Did your 7 trips include Sicily? We spent a week there and wished we'd had more time. On the other hand, I think you'd spend longer times on the road in Sicily-other posters will validate that statement or not-than you would in the San Remo area.
We were in Lake Como (not Dolomites) area one March around Easter and a few places didn't open until April. Again, something to check.
