We're off to Sicily! - Restaurant Suggestions Please
 

We are heading to Sicily this weekend. Yippy! I have searched the boards and have a small list of restaurant suggestions. There are not as many posting for Sicily as there are other areas of Italy.

So I ask if you have any restaurants suggestions. We like to enjoy a gourmet meal as well as good local fare. Here is where we will be staying

Taormina 3 nights
Siracusa 3 nights
Agrigento 1 night
Marsala 3 nights
Palermo 4 nights

Have started planning for a trip next March/April - so I do hope that you post a trip report on hotels, restuarants, getting around and length of time spent in each place!

In Palermo we dined at a casual but delicious place called Ristorante Pizzeria Italia. Address: Via dell Orologio 54. For 26 euro we walked away stuffed with pizza, chicken, salad, wine and beer. From Quattro Canti, take Via Maqueda north and turn right just before Teatro Massimo.

In Monreale I loved a tiny place called "Piccolo Rifugio" located in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele #50. Look for a beige overhang or awning (I can't remember which) that says "Trattoria" on it. We had two "pasta alla Norma", two beers and service for less than 18 euro. Just delicious! No ambiance though just excellent food. Pasta alla Norma is THE dish in Sicily much like Florence is famous for their steak. I tried it at a few places and LOVED it here.

I wrote about our trip to Sicily. It's 3 years old but may be of some use to you. I know that when I was planning my trip I was anxious to read as much as I could from fellow travelers. Buon viaggio!

Easygoer, I believe someone from Canada named Elizabeth posted that she would send a great list to anyone interested if they gave her their e-mail. Bob, you are one of the reasons we are going to Sicily. You help us 4 years ago with a Portugal trip and also helped with Tuscany last year.

You might have come across some of my suggestons in your search, but if not, I highly recommend Don Camillo in Ortygia.

In Palermo, we liked Acanto Blu, near Teatro Politeama, and Santandrea...the latter was a Mario Batali recommendation.

In Taormina, Il Duomo was good..reserve the outdoor terrace if the weather is good.

two weeks sicily, trip report

BTW, I forgot to add another cool find near the Quattro Canti and a block away from our hotel, Grande Albergo Sole. Here's what I wrote:

For dinner we wanted to grab something near the hotel and decided to try a restaurant on the 2nd story a block away on Corso Vittorio Emanuele called "Al Santa Catarina". We were glad we did. We had a delicious pizza, baked homemade pasta with eggplant, beers and a large water for 22 euro. I remember you could sit outside on a narrow terrace overlooking the street.

While you are in Marsala, you'll probably take a trip to Trapani. I recommend dinner at Cantina Sicliana, Via Giudecca, 36. Have the seafood couscous. In the opposite direction from Trapani is Da Vittorio in Porto Palo. http://www.davittorioristorante.com/

It is almost impossible not to get a great meal in Sicily.

Eubes is a wonderful restaurant along the coast in Trapani. Right outside the door are the salt pans where the dried salt is collected. Fresh seafood to be sure. Very nice ambience.

I've just returned from Sicily and can pass along three excellent and inexpensive recommendations...

Palermo: Ristorante Le Volte on via Agrigento, just off via Liberta. Good, fresh enoteca fare, in casual surroundings. Most of the patrons seemed to be locals, and on the night we ate there every table was taken.

Agrigento: Perbacco, on Cortile Lo Presti which is a few steps upstairs off the main pedestrian drag. The food is good and fresh, and the surroundings are especially nice, with stone walls and high, vaulted ceilings.

Catenanuova: Daidone, a little place with a blue awning on the main street. I know, you have never heard of this town, and neither had I, but this turned out to be one of the best dining experiences I've had in years. Catenanuova is a dusty little town just off the much-maligned Palermo-Catania autostrada. We were enroute to Palermo around lunchtime and thought we'd nip off the highway and look for a sandwich or pizza. This was just about the only place open in town, so in we went. On the main floor, there is a bar and pasticceria, but then we heard voices upstairs and noticed a small 'ristorante' sign near some stairs at the back. Sure enough, upstairs was a restaurant jampacked with locals enjoying a hearty lunch. Everything they were eating looked fabulous, and I couldn't believe the cheap prices on the menu. The waiter seemed genuinely thrilled that some tourists had stumbled into the place. I wish I had been hungrier--all I could manage was a plate of pasta, which was excellent. We didn't order dessert, but the waiter brought us, gratis, a big plate of pastries including some fantastic cannoli (somehow I always have room for cannoli!) Then, with the check, he gave us a box of homemade candy to take with us -- again, no charge. Bravissimo, Daidone!

ragusa - duomo restaurant was absolutely great -- about 8 or 10 courses -- 2 star michelin and equal to best of NY, but not pretentious staff.

sciacca- inexpensive trattoria at the harbor next to excellent ceramics shop. drive down to the harbor, pass the supermarket on the right and then look for the trattoria and ceramics store on your left opposite the harbor. i have been looking hard for ceramics and found his work best of what I have seen this trip. have fun,
