We have 3 days in Rome

What should we visit while our stay in Rome. I know that I want to visit Pompei. What is the best way to go there. We appreciate what ever you may help us with. Thank you.

You have only 3 days in Rome and you're thinking of going to Pompeï? That seems odd. What about Ostia Antica? Or just staying in Rome?

Pompeii is a very long - 14 hours or more - trip from Rome.

For a first trip to Rome 3 days is really minimal:

Ancient Rome - Coliseum. Forum. Pantheon, Capitoline Museum

Vatican - St Peter;s, treasury and Dome and Vatican Museums plus Scavi Tour if yuo can get tickets

One day to see all the rest of Rome - piazzas, fountains, other museums ad major churches - don;t miss San Clement - plus an hour sitting in a cafe watching La Dolce Vita

If you only have three days, you won't have time to go to Pompei.Pompei is an all day trip and will involve you going down to Naples out of the Termini train station in Rome and changing to the local train to Pompei.
Rome is not just another city-it is a fabulous city that no matter how many times you have visited you want to see and do more there.
I would recommend a full day for historic Rome, either a half or full day for the Vatican area and at least another day for all of the typical tourist sites like the Spanish Steps,Pantheon,Piazza Navona,Campo di Fiori area,Trastevere, etc.Time is of the essence when visiting Rome-use it wisely!

<<<I know that I want to visit Pompei.>>>

Then you should. I'm an ancient Roman history buff and I would even if I only had 3 days in Rome if it was on my 1st or only visit.

<<<What is the best way to go there.>>>

Put rome to pompeii (note 2 ii's) in the 'Search Box' plenty of directions and info in past threads.

*Off the top of my head*. From Rome's Train Station (Termini) to the Pompeii's entrance is ~3hrs *not* taking the new super-fast train.

Rome to Naples ~2hrs (relaxing), you'll likely have 15mins to get a ticket and board the Circumvesuviana Train (Commuter train every 30mins) and the journey is ~40mins.

Remember I'm not checking the train schedules this is just a guesstamate :-).

But you could leave Rome at 7am, arrive Pompeii 10am, spend 6hrs and be back in Rome ~7/8pm and over dinner remembering that you have seen a one-of-a-kind World Class Famous historical and archaeological site on that long day.

Worth it? Your Call :-)

<< I'm an ancient Roman history buff>> So are many people, and ancient history is more than amply evident in Rome itself.

Rome is not Pompeii and Pompeii is not Rome.

Pompeii is a complete fairly intact Walled and Gated city, a mini-version of Rome in the 1stC.

It gives you the feel of actually being back in time 2000yrs ago.

Just step off the ancient streets into multiple persons' homes, into ancient *intact* Roman Baths, shops, markets, a brothel, Villa of Mysteries, a small town amphitheater compare it to the Colosseum, industries, mosaics, frescos, see the plaster casts their bones still inside and 1 is a slave wearing his slave belt... I wonder what his story was?, etc.

And all that in 6hrs with about 6/7hrs travel time.
