We goofed - Need advice

My husband and I just realized that we did not book a hotel room for one night of our Bavarian vacation. We booked one night in Regensburg, one in Rothenburg, 3 in Garmisch, 2 in Berchtesgaden, and booked the hotel in the Munich airport the night before our early-morning departure. However, we had planned to stay in Berchtesgaden 3 nights instead of 2.

We didn't think that we would have time to see anything of Munich and we booked at the airport because we are leaving really early. But now we are wondering if we should try to book another hotel in or near to the Old Town in Munich. I believe that Oktoberfest starts Sept. 18th so many of the rooms may already be taken on Sept. 12th. Another possibility would be to book a room someplace between Berchtesgaden and Munich. If anyone has a suggestion of a picturesque place to stay I would love to hear about it.
We will already have seen Salzburg earlier on our Danube cruise so wouldn't want to stay there.

I have gotten much good advice from this forum and, once again, thank you all so much for taking the time to reply if you have any advice for us.

Hi frances_hawkins,
Why don't you just stay another night at the airport hotel and take the train into the city. It's only a few minutes and you will save yourself 3-4 hours with check in and checkout.

We stayed in Augsburg last year during Oktoberfest and trained in each day. Very easy and quick.

I wouldn't imagine the hotels are booked up a week before Oktoberfest. There just isn't that much to do to get there a week ahead of time IMO. It is packed from opening weekend on through though, and expensive.

The English Garden in Munich is a lovely park that you can walk through. The bus and S bahn / U bahn system is very easy to understand and you can get to anywhere from anywhere. You can even hop on the train to Dachau if you wish.

Just stay put and enjoy your day!

It is 45 minutes by train from the the main train station in Munich to the airport. That is 1 1/2 hours roundtrip.

I would recommend getting a hotel in/near the Old Town of Munich for your next to last night. You will not need 3-4 hours with check-in and check-out! You don't plan on unpacking your complete suitcase in Munich for one night, correct? Put your jammies, toiletries, and next day outfits on top... very simple.

You can store your luggage at that hotel while you tour Munich on your last day. Then pick up your luggage, get the train to the airport and spend your last night at your hotel near the airport.

Enjoy your trip!

Do a quick check at www.booking.de or www.hotel.de and you'll find alot of available, affordable hotels for Munich the week before Oktoberfest.

While another night in Munich is a good suggestion, I'd add to the nights in Berchtesgaden (total of 3 nights). If you've seen everything you wanted to in the Berchtesgaden area, take a daytrip to Zell am See. Gorgeous and only 1:30 away.

Another option (we visited, never stayed) would be a night in Chiemsee. Visit Ludwig's spectacular Neues Schloss (Herrenchiemsee) here.

I would spend that day (and night) in Prien on the Chiemsee. The Luitpold hotel is just at the lake and very nice. It is veryeasy by public transportation. You could take the steamer to Herrinchiemsee and Frauen insel. The dock is just by the hotel. (This rec is only good if the weather is good.) Have a great trip. CJ
